From Craig - I use this with lower elementary (K) towards the end of a farm unit. All the animals voices get mixed up as they pass a cold around. Student pick the instruments for the different animal voices and they have to switch the instruments back when the animals get better from the cold. It's a blast and everyone gets a little confused at the end.

The book pairs with the Carnegie Hall's Musical Explorers program (South Africa).

Thanks to Katie for letting me know about this book! Haha! So this is the book that we used when I was student teaching with Katie last year. We are using this song to letting kids know each of their names has different meanings and their names are all beautiful, and they can create different melodies using their names (come up with any, basically improvisation). Eventually, kids can sing to it and do a little improvisation play on the orff instruments.(recommend the glockenspiel)

Love, love, LOVED reading this book with my kids (at around election time in November)! We talked about the importance of voting but how only adults can vote. So, as kids, how can we still be the change we want to see? The poem is phenomenal and the illustrations are great conversation starters to talk about how we can make our community a better place :) Could probably be turned into a song too, even though we didn't try that!

From Liban- I use this book as a pre-exploration of the mallets. A stick can be anything the students can imagine. With each newly introduced item such as a horse, the students explore sound effects, and creative imagination to make the horse come to life (moving in high, medium, and low level). They also explore unhitch percussion instruments.

From Liban :)- I love using this book to introduce the barred instruments to my students as well as to provide opportunities to continue exploring the the unhitch percussion instruments. The students explore the barred instruments by going up and down one step (pitch/note) at a time. They also add sound effects to represent the weather: the sun, the wind, night time, etc. They even included rain and a thunderstorm as part of the story so that they can hear the thunder tubes.

The unhitch percussion instruments are used to support the story's narration. The students love bringing this story to life by acting it up and even creating their own versions of the lines. I have used this book to explore the them of ostinati and parallel rhythms. (mixture of ostinati).

"Brown Bear" I use for movement exploration: self-space and general space. Both books can be use to explore a whole combination of musical concepts. The students love creating a sequential story that highlight the animals /instruments. They retell the story as a class with some support from the teacher. "Once upon a time....". p.s. There are bilingual versions of these books.
