This chemical reaction shows a new substance being formed because when the wood is set on fire, ash is the new substance that wasn't present before the reaction. The emissions created from the chemical reaction are carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), sulfur oxides (SOx), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). This again shows a new substance because new gases were produced.

When the cookie dough is mixed together, that shows a physical reaction because the substances are not chemically combined. However, when heat is applied, a chemical reaction is shown when an aroma is produced. The heat applied breaks down the sucrose in the sugar and it becomes oxidized into glucose and fructose fragments. These compounds differ from the original sucrose compounds in the cookie dough. The aroma is produced when the compounds react further and polymerize to form new organic complexes that give off the smell of freshly baked cookies.
