I find it great how despite SEA being vastly different but we also have many things in common to discuss about, and as the latest session showed yes there are things that we disagree on but at the end, we also relate to each other. It’s just nice and fun to learn that universally we’re all really affected by colonialism but also can see its positives and just want the best for each other. I think that programmes like these and these discussions are great for people to get some insights since not everyone has the privilege to gain knowledge from different regions in SEA. Hope to join more in the future!!

-Radin Nasuhakamar Binti Radin Shamsulkamar-

The most memerable part of the programme was panel 2 about steet food. It really provided me with new insights about street food in SEA and what the culture of street food is facing as Hawkers stalls are getting turned into malls and less young people are willing to become hawkers. There are also insights to rising prices of food ($1.90 kopi for Coffee Break was considered expensive as traditional kopi costs around $1.40). Overall, the 5 panels I atteneded provided new insights in the different aspects of SEA and it is very eye-opening experience.

I always find myself being most interested in the last topics, and I think it is because they're both related to education. Last year tackled about the history curricula of SEA countries, and this year tackled about their language policies. It amazes me how big colonization impacts us up until today and I believe this needs more reflecting upon within the SEA regions. We have to ask the right questions and realize where these beliefs and systems of thinking came from, and why we as a country still implement them today. People tend to forget their roots when it's favorable for the majority, and so it's important to keep our own cultures in check and be wary of the effects of globalization in this aspect.

Thank you so much to the SEA team for providing these free! yet incredibly insightful sessions one can only probably get in paid courses. I am truly grateful and will take these lessons with me by heart. Thank you for making education a priority in your program by educating us with these topics. See you next year!

I really enjoyed exploring the vast varieties of themes and topics in SEA and one of my favorite topics was how colonialism affected Southeast Asia and how it impacted the countries in SEA. It also interested me on the different outlooks and how the panel speakers added personal insight into these topics. It was also fun making new friends and working on the Capstone project with members from different parts of the region :))

I really enjoyed the other projects’ presentations whether in form of slideshow, story collation or research papers.

While different stories bring out problems in different SEA countries through the author’s own experiences like child labour and sexual harassment, the research paper gives a more in-depth view of how different countries in or out of SEA are involved in a shared problem, how they attempt to solve it or how they perpetuate it, and their resulting implications on neighbouring countries. From the research paper presentation, I found it really interesting how countries use political influence to protect their own people, as a result also helping neighbouring countries crack down on criminal activity.

Going over to practicality, presentations that introduce apps to tackle issues like excessive carbon emissions from the tourism industry and diminishing hawker culture, by incorporating the SEA region’s diverse culture with technology shows great potential in exploring one solution to tackle multiple problems. One app that has infused multiple features like maps, hawker social media and places to discover may positively impact the tourism industry by facilitating more convenient, sustainable and educational travel in the SEA region.

The capstone conference was as eye opening as the multiple panel sessions held as we got to explore different issues in different sectors (economic, political, physical, cultural, social).

When I first signed up for the SEA Exchange, I was excited but terrified; I was in my final year of Secondary School and I was scared of working and meeting new people (I was never really a fan of team projects). Yet, when I first got into the Zoom call and met my fellow team members, I was glad that I signed up and gave this a chance. Moving to a new country for university with this Capstone Project experience makes me feel more prepared and acknowledged of my own heritage in Southeast Asia. This experience of being able to learn from people of different and unique backgrounds makes me glad for the opportunity this programme has presented as well as for the diversity that the world has supplied us all with. After all, a world with diversity is one worth living in.

I really want to thank my past self to click that "submit" button. Because if i don't, i won't experience this amazing program called, The Southeast Asia Exchange. From the first, to the last panel, i learn and earn more and more of new knowledges, from each discussion session, i can exchange all the amazing thoughts with my groupmates (and they're the best!!!). And from the capstone project, i realized that our Southeast Asia is very much a rich, diverse, lovely region. Thank you The SEA Exchange Team for making this amazing amazing program! Keep going, keep thriving, and keep making good changes!
