The seeds of the Cuban Revolution were planted when Fulgencio Batista, the president of Cuba at the time, cancelled the upcoming 1952 election when it became clear that he would not win. The Cuban population were appalled at his blatant power grab and the lack of democracy. Among them was a man named Fidel Castro, who most likely would have been granted a political position in the 1952 election. Castro began plotting for Batista’s downfall.

Castro’s first attempt to overthrow Batista was an absolute failure. On July 26, 1953, he and his group of 138 rebels decided to attack the Moncada barracks for weapons. Although the rebels hoped that the element of surprise would lead them to victory, most were shot and captured. Although Fidel and his brother Raul escaped, they were later captured.

The brothers and surviving rebels were placed on public trial, ending up with a sentence of fifteen years. However, Fidel used the publicity to his advantage; as a trained lawyer, he used the trial to talk about Batista’s undemocratic power grab rather than his actions against the government. He made long speeches about how he, as a loyal Cuban, would not stand for Batista’s ways; the government only stopped him by claiming that he was too ill to go to his own trial, by which then it was already too late. Although he was given a long sentence, many poor Cubans viewed him as a hero.

In May 1955, Batista was pressured from around the world to reform. The Cuban government released many political prisoners, which included the Castro brothers. They came into contact with many Cuban exiles, including Camilo Cienfuegos and Ernesto “Ché” Guevara. In November 1956, 82 men under the “26th of July Movement” (named after the date of the Moncada raid) set sail to Cuba to start a revolution. However, Batista’s men knew of their intentions and ambushed them; the Castro brothers, Cienfuegos, and Guevara survived and retreated to the highlands. There, they became guerrilla fighters and recruited more and more members. Additionally, as thought.co states, “The leaders of the revolution permitted foreign journalists to visit and interviews with them were published around the world.”

As time went on, the 26th of July Movement was gaining traction throughout Cuba. Other guerilla groups loosely affiliated with Castro attacked in the cities and almost successfully assassinated Batista. When Batista sent much of his army to the highlands to take Castro out, it backfired terribly. Many of Batista’s soldiers either deserted or switched sides and by the end of 1958, Castro and his allies were ready to enact the finishing move.

In late 1958, Castro, Cienfuegos, and Guevara each had forces to “liberate” the towns they came across. As they moved across Cuba fighting the military and recruiting more to their cause, the government was negotiating with Castro in an attempt to halt the bloodshed and make the most out of their situation. Eventually, they realized that attempting to stop Castro’s revolution would be futile. Batista and his circle took whatever they could and fled Cuba, leaving the rebels to take over the capital and the country. Castro entered Havana on January 9, 1959, but not before giving speeches to cheering crowds in all the cities he passed.

All in all, the Cuban Revolution led to the downfall of Batista’s rule and the rise of Castro’s power. Although he initially painted himself as nationalist, he soon leaned towards communism and famously allied himself with the Soviet Union. Cuba under Castro would feud with the United States, leading to infamous conflicts such as the Bay of Pigs and the Cuban Missile Crisis. During his rule, many Cuban migrants fled to the United States.
