As a kindergarden teacher I'm often confined within the limits imposed by my pupils' age, but - at the same time- just their very young age is a positive element to develop intercultural competence, as everything at this very early stage is more immediate and easily accepted. I’m inclined to believe, that one of the most important ways to enhance intercultural competence in young children, even when there are no foreign pupils in the classroom, is to make them become used to listen to differnt points of view as equally accepted and appreciated.

I'd like to expose my students to more intercultural experiences like exchange partnership with European schools but I think it is better to start from the beginning, like understand and appreciate the different culture of your own classmate. Talking with local represents of other cultures, videos from the web, food, sport, books, songs may be a good way to come in touch with other cultures. I would avoid openly discussing over latest news or politics.

Depending on my students’ age, the most common methods are the dialogues and conversations found in the textbook, which they first have to repeat then and practice similar ones. With older students we practice interviews, role plays and debates on different themes.

I teach secondary school students and I am used to approaching the issue of multiculturalism and intercultural awareness in English or German as most of the books present readings about the history of migration and now also about Lampedusa island where we have a lot of refugees and people who arrive from Africa . I think that most of the teachers of foreign languages, but not only them, have focused on the theme of diversity and different cultures. I teach in Reggio Emilia where in the past we had about 100 different nationalities in primary school. It is therefore now part of our syllabus and also in many European projects we have introduced the topic. Some years ago I taught in a vocational school and about 40% of my students came from Pakistan and India. But they were studying and working together and we tried to make them feel accepted and integrated. The best student was an Indian girl who started learning in Italy when she was 9 years old.

Last year my class experienced an eTwinning project with a Greek school and a French school. We worked on the different species of wine and recipes using wine. My students were delighted to share their everyday recipes, and very curious to discover that a thing they thought to know could be used in so different ways. I think it’s important to let students discover other’s culture starting from everyday things.

My students participate in lot activities in eTwinning, in Erasmus + projects, civic education. They haven;t problems with contemporary students from other countries. We participate in programs under Amalipe Center for Interethnic Dialogue and Tolerance. They accept diversities. The problem is that others don't want to accept them. Parents of bulgarian children send them in other schools without roma students.

Well, sometimes when i teach literature i try to work with literateurs who have trevelled over the world. For example, Nikos Kabbadias is a famous Greek poet who had wrote poetries for each place in the world who had visited. So, often work with an interactive map and each children choose his country and show the poem that Nikos Kabbdias had wrote for this place. After that, usually i ask my children about this expereince and tell me interesting things such as during in this way of theaching they feel proud of their mother country. But, finally i don not undestand if they are proud on only of their country but also for others.

In trying to develop learners’ overall communicative competence in the target language through the four language skills as teachers we need to focus more on the intercultural competence as being the approach less taken in the language class. In my opinion there are at least three reasons for such neglect.First, teachers usually have an overcrowded curriculum to cover and lack the time to spend on teaching culture, which requires a lot of work. Second, many teachers have a limited knowledge of the target culture and, therefore, are afraid to teach it. Finally, teachers are often confused about what cultural aspects to cover.
How to organize work : Explanation,the teacher explains to learners the concept of intercultural competence in order to make them aware of the importance of paying attention to the culture of the target language. Collection, learners are given the task to gather material outside the classroom in relation with the cultural topics they have agreed to work with in the first stage. The good thing of this activity is that learners’ cultural awareness is further increased through having to question themselves what is culturally representative of the given topic. Implementation, learners work with a variety of activities that require their use of the four skills in order to develop their overall communicative competence, and promote their cross-cultural awareness and understanding.

I treat the ENVIRONMENT as an inventory of ideas. When you ask the students to look around and try to find 10 project topics , they will find twenty, build a driving question and even share immediately how this or that particular issue is more or less solved in their country. If not, believe me they will be eager to find out and come back with the solution. The dissemination of the results of these multicultural project and assignment takes place on school websites, Facebook, blogs run by students, films, presentations, Twinspace and Erasmus+ fan pages. I develop the curriculum for Ethics, which is aimed at a very diverse student population. Therefore, it is a must that this diversity is present in our resources. I usually talk a lot about "cultural diversity" (or diversity, in general) and students often share their opinions.

In 2012 I created a Facebook group for students to share everything that may be interesting for other classmates.

The FB group includes students from all over Italy and aged from 11 to 22 (about 20% of them are from other countries). We usually post and share newspaper articles, books, movies, documentaries, youtube videos, music and - sometimes - even videogames reviews and we discuss about wars, political issues, and of all main national and international events.

I think this group has proven to be a great tool introducing "cultural diversity" into students' lives.

In my classroom I have worked on twinning projects with other countries and I always try to suggest activities linked to diverse cultures and ways of thinking so that my students reflect on their cultural background and compare it with other cultures ( for example we compare festivals, food and traditions). Host weekly quizzes on a set theme and learn how much your students know about different cultures, religions, disabilities etc. You could even assign the task of writing the quiz to 2 students each week so that they are involved in doing the research.

A quick activity you can do at the start of a lesson to introduce the theme of multiculturalism. Ask your students to create a list of everything in their life that comes from a country outside Present the class with some facts about people with disabilities, another culture or based on the protected characteristics and ask them to decide whether the facts are true or false. In my opinion, the appropriate resource mixed with strategy, has to be changed very often, considering a lot of issues when we talk about multicultural classes. A tool useful for some, isn't good at all for the others, caused by religion, traditions, family. If a school has a solid background about including multicultural classes, that experience must be shown to other schools. The best resources are friendship, understanding, updating knowledge about the new history of the world.If the school has a solid reputation, the students will do everything to respect the principles there.

I teach French as foreign language and last year I had a multicultural classroom . When I presented the French cuisine I had an idea : I asked my students to write a typical recipe of their country and after this, we shared our recipes. I learned a lot of things about their culture from these presentations and my students too.

As a teacher of English I usually use Engish textbooks which are full of intercultural references and texts connected with cultural habits, rules or interesting life stories of people from all over the world. Students mostly enjoy these texts. I personally like Project series for primary age group students, bacause the books contain life- like stories with multicultural characters in English settings. I usually supplement coursebooks with quizes, song, pictures and online links. I think these all can enhance students' cultural knowledge and help them to accept and understand people from other cultures. I am also planning to join eTwinning projects in the future

As an English teacher , I try to use textbooks and story books that promote interculturality and multiculturality as much as possible. by doing so, I help my students get exposed to different cultures and civilisations making them simultaneously more tolerant towards them.

Students are educated to see the world around them made up of a multicultural society. The materials we find on internet or book resources are planned to have a multiracial vision. They don't ask why there are characters from different countries, probably ADULTS notice the differences, because when they were young their classes were made up of friends of the same nationality. One of this class was mine.

A teaching resource that I use regularly is my textbook integrated by worksheet and anything from the website. I teach English Language and Culture in an Italian Secondary School. When I introduce some specific issues such as Crhistmas traditions or New Year’s traditions in the English speaking countries, I always ask the Italian students as well as the pupils coming from different countries how they celebrate these events in their homeland. I know my resource isn’t fully appropriate to use in a culturally diverse classroom, because it is confined to specific issues and it isn’t integrated as a cross-curricular theme. I realize I have to work hard to develop the competences of an interculturally competent teacher.

I choose to analyse a resource which I am using presently with my students which is a document Called "let me introduce myself" in which students complete a fill in the gaps text to talk about themselves. On consideration I find that it is quite "open" as it allows a variety of answers (there are no cultural boundaries, for example you can say that your family is formed by any number of members or you can write about many different types of food, etc.). As I resource I think it can be used interculturally as it may help to highlight differences while at the same time giving all answers the same importance. I teach litterature which is originated by the perception of diversity. By the feeling to be different. Reading a poem is an exercise in open-mindedness and acceptance. I have in my classroom Romanian students and their native language is of Latin origin. So, we have a common linguistic root to work with. I share my experiences of everyday life with the class. It is like a break from the main lesson. I usually pick up an anecdote correlated to the topic discussed. I lived abroad for number of years in different countries, my hubby has different nationality than mine. To teach fundamental or philosophical principles I start from everyday life. For example, shanking hands or kissing on the cheek (one side, both sides, three times?), is talking about acknowledge, recognition and role of a person within a society. Such a little and automatic action, in fact reveals a lot about cultural background. Do you kiss a stranger? Or just friends? Do men kiss each other, or simply shake their hands? Do you keep distance, or you look for closeness? I like to tell about confusion created when two persons from different background meet. It happened to me, to my hubby. Something you give for granted (the way to introduce yourself, to sit on a table, to eat etc) is in fact a product of the culture you grew up in. That's part of what you are, it forms your identity too. You start noticing it just when it is not so common and other people act differently. Then you realise that it is just another point of view. For some people that's scary because it rocks their foundations, their roots, their way of thinking and naturally reject anything different. That is racism, the fear and rejection of what is different. We are all a bit racists, it is the way our brain works (prejudices are shortcuts of complicated thoughts). Nonetheless, we can understand and direct our primordial reactions into logical thinking and empathic approach to overcome irrational fears. When we do not feel safe in our own country, we become more aggressive. Sharing my experiences I hope to teach kids to feel safe as they are, to get comfortable with our own weaknesses and doubts, that weak doesn't mean inferior and strong doesn't mean superior. And to recognise the influence of the society we live in.

As I said, I teach Italian literature and Latine culture. The mandatory texts are culturally biased. Dante an extremely politically incorrect genius. In Inferno (XV and XVI), homosexuals are doomed; the founder of a non christian religion (please allow me to simplify a complex issue) is eternally damned; "Jews" are blamed. We read four poems of chivalry that celebrate war against another religion (other than "ours"). Like the Roman de geste in the French tradition. We have to refer to the historical conditions under which those texts were written. However, they are great literary works. They represent and constitute our cultural tradition. Like, e.g., Don Quijote, a masterpiece. It seems we got a problem with the European heritage here.

I often work with LIM and try to make examples that are close to different cultures. I worked One-to-One with students from China, Marocco and Romany and I Always found useful to have some lessons, before teaching something, on "How do you know/talk about this in your family/country?"... for example (teaching mathematics) I've noticed that the girl from China was very fast in making calculus and logical reasoning but she used different path from the ones that I was used to teach in my classrooms. I don’t  have foreign students in the classroom . If I had someone, I think I could use the same teaching methods that are used in a context without foreign pupils . However considering the language difficulties , it is necessary that the communication is mainly sustained by a whole series of activities that don't cause the sense of failure.In this regard , the socialization and the learning can develop when the pupils work in groups( large or small)  and use the new technologies regularly. Interactive multimedia whiteboards (IWB) , rele-play, word games, team player , digital education tools...  will have to replace the traditional methods of Teaching / Learning. Could be the flipped classroom an effective strategy?

After the Bataclan massacre, my students were very very upset. I started to bring material to reflect on how religion has nothing to do with the choices of the attackers. We read many letters published on magazines and newspapers about muslins' disapproval of such an action. I also find examples of degeneration of believers' conduct in other religions. With another multicultural class we devoted an hour a week of the whole school year to study about ISIS and the people of all beliefs, including muslins, struggling against it. Our school has just started working on an Erasmus + KA2, focusing on integration and inclusion. Our first activities are very simple and try to raise our students' awareness about their own culture - and the idea of culture as a whole. The project acronym is MIRRORS...and the ambitious aim is "to turn mirrors into windows" :)

I taught for just one year at a private Primary School where there were not many foreign students. Nevertheless, I immediately realised that children are very curious about other cultures and they are fascinated by them. When we were studying professions, for example, I prepared an activity with pictures of people doing different jobs and coming from different parts of the World. The only Chinese boy in the class really appreciated the fact that there was a Chinese doctor among the pictures, and children kept making me questions about the people they saw. They were convinced I knew them all and wanted to know more about their life. That can be an excellent starting point to make students (even older ones, I believe) aware of differences and similarities. And if there are foreign students, it is even better if we let them tell the rest of the class about their daily life or the topic of the lesson. It is also a good way to show students that other people may also perceive us as being "strange" or "weird", because everybody tends to believe that what is typical for his/her own culture is normal.

In our school we do Erasmus and eTwinning projects which help students to explore and come in touch with other cultures. For the purpose of the specific activity I've chosen the official textbook I use in the second year of secondary school "Think Teen II". The heading of the very first unit is 'Unity in Diversity'. So, early in the school year, there is a range of reading and listening activities (eg. 'the way we look', 'a child's life in...), project work on culture entitled "Joined in our Differences". It is up to the teacher to exploit this material depending on the classroom intercultural synthesis. This is not an easy thing to do since children of migrant families are usually self-conscious and hesitant.

For learning the social context is fundamental. Helped by a more competent person the child can improve and achieve its optimum level. When the tutor is his equal there are several benefits. Although many of us may maintain that we use didactic materials that agree with the principles of intercultural education, I think that this seldom is the case. The reason for this is not but the character of the educational systems. Countries whose systems are bureaucratic and nationalistic do not promote teachers' autonomy in the school. As a result of this teachers stick to national identity, centrally produced textbooks and the national culture and do not really care about using resources that consider other students' cultures.

As a special education teacher I usually do individual therapies. Besides it's part of my job to visit other schools, kindergartens where are some children with special educational needs are learning. During these visits I make an opportunity for the students to try how is life for a disabled kid through different activities, like trying how to make a sandwich with only one arm, get dressed with one of your hands not working properly or how to use a wheelchair in daily life. These practices are not worksheets or textbooks, but good tools for making them experience diversity. Adapting it to cultural diversity I can imagine days where the students listen to folk music, dress in folk clothing and try how is it to be like a person from another country.

I tend to use pair work and group work a lot, so whatever the teaching material might be, it is the balance among students that somehow addresses cultural diversity. I think a lot about how to mix and match students because I believe that working together is what most raises their awareness of each other's value.
I often get them to work on questions (e.g. if they have to show their understanding of a written text) or images (it might be works of art they are to describe and/or comment) and it is interesting to hear - or to elicit - different cultures' points of view on the same piece of work.

- draw in class examples from they countries;
- produce glossary of terms;

- create small groups work in class;
- discussion groups around important content.
I think is important make esplecit the benefits of diversity and pratice good communication in the classroom.
Sharing my experience, the best method with my students is Co‑operative learning. It's a specific kind of collaborative learning in which students or participants do not simply work on unstructured tasks in pairs or small groups but work together on activities that have specific co‑operative principles built into the very structure of the tasks.

As a Computer Science teacher I use ICT tools to promote collaboration and team-building activities. Students usually are asked to perform in pairs, overcome differences while working together and aim for the same goal. As I teach Religion in a Primary School, I have often encouraged my pupils to work in team to develop PowerPoints and then share their work with the rest of the class: they have been working for instance on holy and forbidden food in Judaism, Islam, Christianity, Hinduism, to better understand how religion influences even the way we eat and share our meals. I am lucky enough to be able to use a LIM in every class, in order to get pictures, watch videos, listen to songs with the children. The best teaching resource, though, are the children themselves: those coming from a different country or having a religion other than Catholicism are encouraged to talk to the class about it, to bring objects, symbols, even clothes that speak about their culture and share it with their friends who are all eager listeners.

I use a range of resources in my classroom. R.Murphy's grammar book is not one of those which I use the most (for many reasons). Nevertheless, I decided to analyse it as I know that the books from this series are favoured by many teachers in many countries.

My vote in the pole is "no, not really" - this book is not really suitable for a culturally diverse classroom as it barely incorporates any examples, characters, situations, etc. that reflect the diversity of experiences of students who come from different cultural backgrounds.

The book is likely to be aimed at adult learners as the characters hardly include any children. The choice of race, names, clothes, food, buildings, interiors, transport, musical instruments, hobbies, festivals, etc. in the images and texts suggests that the characters and situations largely refer to the European culture. Even though several countries and nationalities are mentioned, those are not enough to acknowledge or promote intercultural competence.

To be perfectly fair on the book, I must say that the edition that I worked with dates back to 2003. Let's hope that the later editions have been altered to provide for culturally diverse content. ;)

I always try to adapt my resources to my students and update my schedule to their needs, especially when there are foreign pupils in class. To promote intercultural competence I usually use visual aids, as pictures, short videos, films, advertising or real photos in different situations. We sit in circle, discuss and share experiences. In groups or in pairs, we prepare interviews, listen to songs or talk about festivals or food. All students give their contributions and personal ideas and create a final product to introduce the class, focusing on the value of diversity and open-mindedness.

Since I am not yet a teacher I do not utilize any resources as of yet, however I think there are many that can be utilized to incorporate the culturally diverse elements in a classroom. For example, one can ask the students to write a report about their heritage, family history, or favorite places that they may have visited. In this case, students may find similar stories that they have experienced and share their backgrounds to find how the differences can be interesting and fun. As a follow up exercise, students could supplement their reports by doing some research on the places and discover why they are important, find famous individuals from these places and reasons to visit these places.

When I prepare a reading comprehension for my students, I always create stories about children and families from other English speaking countries and insert information that will strike them because of their differences: their names, what they eat, what time they have meals, what kind of a house they live in, what activities they do. I try to adapt my resources to the class in front of me. For this, I can’t imagine a resource "perfect", that can always and in every way built examples, characters, situations, etc. that reflect the diversity of experiences of my students.

However, there are some resources best help for me. Unfortunately, one of those that my pupils preferred is no longer available. It was Bitstripsforschool. With this tool all students (even those who did not speak Italian) well yet could express themselves by creating comic.

I use many games and worksheets that put my students cooperate and help each other. I use many materials from education.com or twinkl.co.uk. I adapt the materials so that the foreign students could understand and I made individual lesson planning for them.

I am a math teacher and my students are most Portuguese, but of Muslims, Gypsies, black race Africans and whites.
Often students enter school without knowing how to speak Portuguese which hinders understanding and communication.

The activities that develop in mathematics lessons, by chance, I usually ask the musical tastes and favorite dances of each student. Also usually ask what they like to do in their free time, the favorite sport. I give students opportunity to express their interests and tastes.
Then I help students to make a statistical study on the interests of students.

The activities that the school develops usual be dances and songs of each student home region and even food characteristics of the countries where they came from.
In information tests, assessment test or other tests prepared by me I try to put images that are not stereotyped. In the pictures the children appear with all the colors and made things, the names of the boys in these tests can be Portuguese names as Muslim / Arab or English names.
Nor was heavy in the great importance of these small details in students.

As I am a teacher of Geography and Integration Area at every moment of my classes I do moments of comparison asking students to investigate the differences. If I have students of different origin - cultural, social, religious, (...) - I ask them to share these differences and I ask others, respect to the what is presented, bearing in mind that we must demand equality when the difference discriminate, and demand the difference when equality uncharacterize.

When I did my placement at a Spanish school, the teacher each week had a different protagonist of the week and they all would have a turn in order. Each child would bring pictures or objects about their life, and would explain where they were born, where tey lived, about their family memebers, traditions, interseting facts, what their favorite sports, food are etc. And then, they would paste the pictures in a book made os stapled papers and write anything interesting, finally each student would do a little drawing in a small paper about the protaginist child, about what they liked most, about twhat they like most about the child and paste the pictures in the end of the book. I think it is a great idea to share their different cultural diversities, backrounds and experiences even when coming from different cities in the same country.

I am an elementary school teacher so I try to prepare my students to see the world through different points of view. in this it is useful resources that are offered by the Internet. with my class often we surf the web in search of cultural ideas of other people and discuss about traditions and ways of life.
These activities are supported by the presence of an interactive whiteboard that we use every day in our classes

I listened to the videos lesson and I agree with the idea that we Teachers have to be creative and use as many tools s possible , I sue for example Kahoot or quizlet, or I ask my students to create prezi presentation of their work, It is true that the students get more knowledge and competences when they can be given the opportunity to express themselves according to their attitues, and creative resources i really appreciated what Alicia says in this video about the teaching resources .
