Materials Used in Artificial Reefs

Anything from broken cars to sunken ships can be converted for use into artificial reefs. Most artificial reefs are created from objects originally intended for other purposes. Cheaper alternatives to this include, but are not limited to, placing rubble at the desired spot, sinking cinder blocks, or using PVC. PVC can be used to prefabricate structures and waterproof them, before sinking them. Pretty much anything can be used to create an artificial reef, so long as it is altered to not release toxic chemicals, degrade in harmful ways, or unintentionally trap fish inside.

Popular Artificial Reefs

There are several popular artificial reefs which a diver in Northwest Florida might encounter. Since there are no naturally occurring reefs, divers are forced to dive in sunken ships which function as artificial reefs. Three primary reefs are the Three Coal Barges which were sunk in 1974 at a depth of 54 feet, The San Pablo (a Russian freighter) which was sunk in 1943 at a depth of 84 feet and the Oriskany which was sunk in 2006 at a depth of 212 feet. Another ship that was sunk off of Pensacola was Pete Tide II. The ship was sunk intentionally upright in 100 feet of water and has an intact pilot house allowing you too really see how the marine has settled in with the ship.

For anyone wanting to build an artificial reef these are the steps you should follow:

Pick an area that has a good amount of undersea activity.

Construct your build outside of the water out of nontoxic materials such as cinder blocks.

Bring your materials out to sea in your desired area.

Construct the design you created out of water within your sunken materials, starting with the base of the reef and working your way up.

Monitor, maintain and protect your reef with weekly or biweekly visits and keep coming with new ideas to expand.
