Ai Weiwei Sculpture Purposefully Broken During Exhibition Opening in Italy

This article was about a man who destroyed a porcelain sculpture by Ai Weiwei, and it seems that this was on purpose. Ai actually got footage of the event and posted it on his instagram. However it is a mystery how this man entered the gallery because it was an invite only exhibition. He was detained and eventually arrested for “destruction, dispersion, deterioration, defacement, soiling and illicit use of cultural or landscape assets.” The curator of the show told press that he unfortunately had other destructive encounters with this person in other shows that they had been a part of.

MFA or Nah? 8 Key Takeaways From a Conference on Art Schools and Residencies

This article was very interesting to read. I have always wondered if coming to college was financially the best choice for me. In this article 8 takeaways were discussed. The first one was to not count on getting rich and famous once you graduate. A very low percentage of students actually make enough money to pay off their student loans and debt soon after they graduate. And many artists don't even make enough off of their art as a living, they have to get second and sometimes even third jobs to be able to afford groceries and rent. The second point was discussing if a college degree is even worth it. Depending on the degree that a student gets, they may be offered a position right away (for example an art education degree) or they may have to work really hard to even get into a gallery space. The third point goes along with this, don't quit your day job. As artists are starting out, they may need the extra income to keep themselves out of debt (or to pay off college debt). The fourth point is about public schools. While they are a much cheaper option, they are often underfunded. The fifth point is about applications. Artists have to make sure to carefully read instructions and not just skim through things. To go along with this, if you get rejected dont send nasty emails, think about why you may have been rejected and make yourself better before you apply somewhere else. The sixth point is basically saying that one size does not fit all. Some students thrive in an environment where they can work alongside fellow artists and get feedback from professors. Whereas others may not thrive in that environment. The seventh point is about red flags, and how to avoid them in applications. It was also noted that no reputable program would require artists to leave any work behind. As an artist, you take your work with you. The eighth point was about how expectations change with time. What could fly 20 years ago wont work now, and what works now would not have worked 20 years ago. Its all about being able to read the environment that you are in, and creating to sell in that space (if you are looking to earn a living from your art)

I thought that this article was interesting because all of the things in this exhibit are hand made in America. It is an assortment of furniture, jewelry, decor, and functional design items. The exhibit is full of bright colors which draw the viewer into the show. One example is a soft and colorful sofa. Many of the items have been used, they were not just made for show in this exhibit. As the viewer walks through the different rooms, there is a different theme. For example on room is full of jewelry, and another room is full of lamp shades.

Johnny Depp opened a massive exhibition of his art in New York. He titled it "A Bunch Of Stuff" and it features various works that he has made over the past few years. You enter the show through a winding path draped red curtains, then you enter an area with dozens of called "The White Box" Then you walk through "The Black Box" where there is an animated film. Some of the spaces are filled with words and fragments of thoughts. And other sections are filled with "stuff" suspended from the ceiling. All of his works vary in style and material. For example, some of the paintings are made from canvases composed of cigarette papers.

A new exhibition at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna shows the work of Rembrandt in conversation with his student Samuel van Hoogstraten.

“Rembrandt – Hoogstraten: Color and Illusion,” is the largest showing of Rembrandt’s major works. It features over 60 paintings and drawings by the artists side by side. It not only considers the teacher-pupil relationship but also looks at these two painters’ work in a 21st-century context. In the article it compared the works of Rembrandt to his student Samual. For example, Rembrandt's use of darkness and light to create forms and illuminate details, and Samuel's use of perspective boxes which create a 3d form while also creating an illusion.

A man named Halim Zukic bought a plot of land two decades ago and he was unsure what to do with it. One day he was standing on a hill admiring the view when he noticed that there were tractor marks carved into a meadow of hay, and it kind of looked like Vincent van Gogh’s The Starry Night (1889). This gave him an idea, and over the next six years he would make his idea of The "Starry Night". He bought more land and began to sculpt it. He planted trees, turned streams into lakes, and brought in lavender in 6 different shades as well as herbs such as sage, wormwood, and chamomile, which he formed into colorful swirls and spirals. He said “Inspired by the painting, I tried to stick to the shapes and proportions, so that it looks like the painting as much as possible.” He worked alongside 20-30 gardeners in order to compete such a large task on so much land.

The Surprising Backstory Behind Gustav Klimt’s Obsession With Gold

Gustav Klimt made gold modern. At the turn of the 20th century, the Viennese artist captivated public attention with his depictions of women which he adorned with copious amounts of gold leaf. These visions changed the course of 20th-century art. Most famous among these was, "The Kiss" (1907–08) which depicts a man and woman embracing, their bodies dissolved into golden abstractions. It has become the icon of the artist’s celebrated “Golden Phase,” an era of work when ornamental gold leaf featured prominently across his canvases. Depictions of armor became one way he introduced gold into his works. Klimt used gold liberally and creatively, adorning his backgrounds and ornamenting his figures with gold leaf and coloring, creating intricate decorative patterns.

How Raven Halfmoon Channels Indigenous History and Identity Into Her Monumental Sculptures

Raven Halfmoon (Caddo Nation) makes monumental, totemic sculptures that speak to the living power of indigenous peoples. Halfmoon is best known for towering, glazed stoneware figures that are more than twice human scale and can weigh hundreds of pounds. These figurative beings, whom Halfmoon builds from a coil method, combine Caddo pottery traditions with a range of artistic influences including Land Art and Easter Island. For the first time the artist presents work in stone and bronze, in addition to new stoneware sculptures. In these works, twinned figures appear, hinting at the multiplicities present in each person. Her works include a 9-foot bronze sculpture and a 7-foot figure made from travertine. She says, “My work is an ongoing quest to bridge past, present, and future, with particular focus on my Tribal Nation’s history, tradition, and culture. Growing up in Oklahoma, a state with 38 federally recognized Tribal Nations, I’ve felt it part of my responsibility to reclaim space for myself and my Caddo lineage. I feel a passion and a responsibility to share my family’s story and hopefully normalize Native culture and the Native experience in the 21st century. Every sculpture I create carries within it my experiences such as going to dances, listening to stories, and learning our history. Each sculpture contains a piece of me. Each sculpture reflects the powerful spirit of Native people, my family, and me. I view my pieces as monolithic beings that demand to be heard, acknowledged, and experienced.”
