Soups are a symbol of their physical and mental state. It represents their hunger and their motivation to survive. When they watch some the executions, it is the best thing the prisoners have ever tasted, because they are reminded of their mortality. When they watch the life drain out of a young boy they have no desire to live because it was unfair that he could not keep living as well, so it tasted like corpses.

They believed the nazis were finally getting the revenge they desereved.

When people were being hanged they often shouted out boldly "Long live liberty!" (64). These men were killed but they were still proud to have made an effect or impact on the jewish people of the camp and the officials.

Sadie O'Dowd, Telula Behrmann, Phillip Niakoulov, Yasmin Kabir

“Behind me, I heard the same man asking: ‘For God’s sake, where is God?’ And from within me, I heard a voice answer: ‘Where He is? This is where--- hanging here from this gallows…’” (Wiesel, 65).
This quote shows the motif of God and the loss of faith the Jews were experiencing. We see this in multiple areas of the book.

"All of a sudden, this pleasant and intelligent young man had changed. His eyes were shining with greed" (Wiesel 55).
“We breathed in air filled with fire and smoke, and our eyes shone with hope” (Wiesel 60).
Here we see the motif of eyes being used to show the prisoner's emotions. Eyes are frequently associated with the saying "eyes are the windows to the soul."

“the soup tasted better than ever…” (Wiesel 63)
“That night, the soup tasted of corpses" (Wiesel 65).
The taste of the soup reflects the hope of the prisoners at the time. When the prisoner was hung saying, "Long live liberty! My curse on Germany! My curse! My---" (Wiesel, 62) it gave the prisoners some hope and a little bit of justice. When the child was hung, it diminished their previous hope.

This is where-hanging here from this gallows..."
(Wiesel 65) (blue book)

This quote shows how the Jews slowly start loosing faith in God. In the beginning of the novel, Elie was all about his religion and God. When he first arrived to the camps in chapter 3 he was questioning God and what he would do with his power. Now he has lost faith in God in chapter 4.

They had faced something far worse than death and they also believed that death was not the end. They believed that after death they would rise and they would no longer have to succumb to human cruelty.

"In fact, I was pleased with what was happening to him: my gold crown was safe. It could be useful to me one day, to buy something, some bread, or even time to live" (Wiesel 52). Blue Book. The gold crown is a symbol of Wiesel clinging onto his old life. He risks danger by lying about his condition, just to keep the gold crown and a semblance his past self. It also represents a security, a comfort because it reminds of who he used be and also an opportunity for bread or bargaining in the future.
