“Colonial processes have shaped white feminists' oblivion to their race privilege and their indifference to the history of their relations with Indigenous women. The exercising of white race privilege therefore remains uninterrogated. The power that whiteness confers is normalised within feminist texts and practice. As beneficiaries of colonisation, white feminists have been able to challenge and remake themselves as white women through the state and other institutions. White feminist alliances with the state maintain the centrality of the subject position middle-class white woman in policies and programs designed for all women. This enables racial and cultural differences to be managed without disturbing normative practices or the structural location of white power and privilege."

“The subject position middle-class white woman has functioned in Australian culture as the embodiment of true womanhood. This subject position informs the everyday assumptions and behaviour of white feminists and underpins the prioritising of their goals over those of the most oppressed group of women in Australian society. All women live with the history of their subjectivity but are not necessarily conscious of its impact on their behaviour and attitudes. White women come to feminism with already formed subjectivities linked to different histories, privileges, power and oppression. They are socially situated subjects who are located in power relations where whiteness remains invisible, natural, normal and unmarked."

“The cultural capital that white race privilege confers means that there is no imperative for these white feminists to change their sociality or their pedagogy. […] Their anti- racist practice, as an intellectual engagement, is evidence of their compassion, but racism is not a part of their interiority. “Making the subject position middle-class white woman visible in white feminist academic discourse reveals the power effects of its invisibility. By making visible the subject position middle-class white woman, this book has sought to show the complexity of, and limits to, relations between white feminists and Indigenous women. To change the power relations between these two groups of women is more complex than giving voice, making space or being inclusive within a white feminist politics of difference. The dominance of the subject position middle-class white woman diminishes the inclusiveness of a politics of difference in Australian feminism because it leaves whiteness uninterrogated, centred and invisible. As Davy argues, "white womanhood needs to be theorised as an institution in the service of white control and supremacy in the same way that heterosexuality has been used as an institution in the service of patriarchy" (1997:213). The knowledge produced from such analyses can inform feminist theory and be used in anti-racist practice.

“Indigenous women's challenges to white feminism are informed by our sovereignty. We do not want to be white. Our politics are about achieving self-determination as a people. In our critiques of Australian feminism we make visible how white feminists represent the "Indigenous woman". […] Indigenous women as embodiments of racial difference can never know what it is like to experience the world as a white woman, just as white women can never know what it is like to experience the world as an Indigenous woman.

“White feminist imaginings of these power relations serve to erase the actualities of colonialism and reinforce the dominance of the subject position middle-class white woman. The myth of commensurable difference allows white women to position themselves as gendered, classed,

sexualised, aged and abled rather than white. However, the myth of commensurable difference does not work the same way for Indigenous women who perceive whiteness to be overwhelmingly and disproportionately predominant. White women occupy the key roles, they constitute the norm and the ordinary and they represent the standard of womanhood in Australia."

“White feminists must learn to accept that Indigenous women's involvement in feminism will be partial due to discrepancies in power, incommensurabilities, different histories, experiences, epistemologies and material conditions. This partiality reflects Indigenous women's understandings that white feminists have the dominant position and that conflict, disruption, dissension, incommensurabilities, consensus and commensurabilities will exist in our relations with them. If lndigenous women's interests are to be accorded some priority, white feminists will need to relinquish some power.

“This book has shown that whiteness needs to be interrogated as a specific form of privilege. However, the real challenge for white feminists is to theorise the relinquishment of power so that feminist practice can contribute to changing the racial order. Until this challenge is addressed, the subject position middle class white woman will remain centred as a site of dominance. It is hard to want self-determination in a system that is very Westernised. I think that is that we are trying to incorporate now. That is why it can be difficult for it to happen now, and hopefully it will happen in the future. But it will be a slow process ... there are ways we can do it in small doses that are effective and good, but at the same time I think it also requires mass disruption, that organisations might not be ready for (Nathan Sentance, Wiradjuri).
