He confirmed himself as one of the leading writers of the Enlightenment. Voltaire is widely considered one of France's greatest Enlightenment writers. He was often at odds with French authorities over his politically and religiously charged works, he was imprisoned twice and spent many years in exile. In 1778, he died shortly after returning from Paris.


                                          Beliefs and Philosophy

Voltaire found inspiration in enlightenment philosophers such as Isaac Newton, John Locke, and Francis Bacon, He found inspiration in their ideals of a free and liberal society, along with freedom of religion and free commerce. 

                                                         Early Life

Voltaire was born Francois-Marie Arouet to a prosperous family on November 21, 1694 in Paris, France. Following his mothers death when Voltaire was only seven, he grew closer to his free-thinking father. He lived in Paris, France.

                                                         Well-known works

Some of Voltaire's best known poetry works include (these are his popular poems)The Henraide which was written in 1723 and The Maid of Orleans which he started in 1730 but never fully completed. Some of his best known plays include the Adaptation of Sophocle's tragedy which was performed in 1718. 

                                     Influences on the american government

Voltaire was a strong advocate of social reform which means that he believed in 
having a type of social or political system closer to the community's ideal, in other words he influenced the american to vote. Another influence is he influenced us to have the freedom of religion which in other other country's you could get arrested.


                                                      2 Major Ideas

Voltaire believed above all in the efficacy of reason. Voltaire believed that social progress could be achieved through reason. He also EMPHASIZED in his work the importance of tolerance, especially religious tolerance.
