The theme of Lies and Deceit is shown through this symbol as God is always seen in the context of judgement. When Myrtle is killed and had sinned for not being faithful, the eyes of Doctor T. J Eckleburg loomed over, simply watching. As it is constantly repeated by Wilson, “God sees everything.” That one aphorism practically gives the idea that no matter what you hide, God sees everything. God will know all the mistakes and every little action, as said by Wilson. God represents the truth and moral judgement overseeing the lies and deceit by Tom and Myrtle.

Many of the main characters align with this symbol, Myrtle for example lives in the town where the eyes of TJ Eckleburg is constantly looking over and yet she continues to do wrong, to her husband and to Daisy. Additionally, when Daisy is passing through the valley of ashes driving Gatsby's car, She kills Myrtle right in front of the eyes of TJ Eckleburg. This symbol represents how during this time no one had morals and many lacked empathy, many cheated on their spouses, stole, cheated the law all for their own personal gain and TJ Eckleburg, whom is supposed to represent God, is simply watching all the wrong doings.

"A stout, middle-aged man, with enormous owl-eyed spectacles, was sitting somewhat drunk on the edge of a great table, staring with unsteady concentration at the shelves of books"(45).
During this scene, the man who is supposed to be the literal personification of TJ Eckleburg is here in Gatsby's library drunk. TJ Eckleburg is also supposed to represent God, and here God is drunk and alone. Through this representation the author clearly did not have much faith or hope in God, which is why he portrays him in the valley of ashes, a very run down area where the residents are struggling to get by and again at gatsby's party which is filled with high class people with no morals or ethics. He also uses TJ to say something about Gatsby. During this scene he is exclaiming that all the books in the library are real, through this the author is trying to say that gatsby too is real.

“Standing behind him, Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, which had just emerged, pale and enormous, from the dissolving night.” (p. 159-160)

It has already been established in the book that the enormous sign of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg’s eyes were a representation of the eyes of God. During this situation, Wilson is breaking down and grieving over the loss of Myrtle. He was aware of the affair that Myrtle was involved in and kept repeating that no matter how much she tried to hide it, she cannot keep it a secret in the eyes of God. Wilson stares out at the seemingly eyes of God for a long time, possibly contemplating that although he intends to kill Gatsby under the eyes of God, God would justify it over Gatsby’s actions. The imagery being portrayed is a dark and cloudy night, looming over the recent death of Myrtle, with the giant eyes of Doctor T. J Eckleburg, judging all those sinning below him.
