The father was the head of the family. Roman law gave him complete authority over all members of the familia including slaves which they wealthier families kept.
Roman woman had to do what their fathers and husbands told them. A father chose who his children would marry and usually had his daughters married at 14 years of age. The marriage became final after she had lived at the husbands house for 12 months.
Boys were educated and taught to be brave, loyal and proud. Girls were taught household duties by their mothers. As soon as they were old enough the children of poor families had to work. Children of rich families were supposed to be as successful as their parents to ensure that their family honour was maintained.
