Rites of Passage:

Rites of passage is a term used to describe a ceremony or a ritual of transitions that marks a person's change from one status or social position to another. Rites of passage has 3 steps: seperation, transition, and incorporation.

Birth Rituals in Korea:

The rituals begin during pregnancy. The food taboos include: hot and spicy foods, and broken crackers or cookies. They have symbolic actions that signified an easy delivery of the baby, for example: family members left doors open, didn't repair rooms, doors, or fireplaces in the kitchen. After birth, the mother eats seaweed soup, and she doesn't drink cold water for 21 days. After 100 days there is a special ceremony, and on the first birthday the baby is seated in front of a table and the parents choose the objects related to the future they want for the baby.

Islamic Weddings:

A bedouin wedding can last up to a week and reflects the ancient arab belief that marriage is the joining of two families. There are seven steps in a bedouin wedding: Proposal, marriage contract, the henna party (the henna is associated with health, beauty, and luck.), the arrival of the groom's relatives at the brides home to dance and admire her trousseau, the separate seating of men and women as well as gifts <s>from gifts,</s> the first meeting of the bride and the groom in their home, <s>and </s>finally one week after, the bride visits her parents which symbolizes comfort.

Funerals in Thailand:

In thailand (a buddhist country) it is believed that after death, the person is born again in another body. A major goal of a thai funeral is the achievement of a good rebirth for the deceased. First, as the person is dying, they are encouraged to think about buddhist scriptures. Then, after death, the body is taken to the temple and it is covered except for one hand, which is washed as a way of respect. Then, the body is placed in a coffin. People place candles around it and monks come to chant. After a while, relatives and monks come take the body for cremation on a funeral pyre. People come to it with white paper flowers, candles, and the sweet smelling substance. It is believed the spirit benefits from the chanting but after the body burns the spirit is cut off. Some families keep the ashes at home or at the temple.
