Nutrition Facts
Sodium 290 mg: Sodium is absorbed in the small intestine and it helps keep the body's fluids at a normal balance. Sodium also plays an important role in muscle and nerve function.
Carbohydrates 10 g: The digestion f carbohydrates begins in the mouth when you chew and chemically break down your food in your mouth. Carbohydrates are also chemically broken down in the small intestine. They provide energy for working muscles.
Fibre 8 g: Fibre isn't digested, it passes through your system relatively intact. Fibre helps control blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
Protein 3 g: Protein is digested in the stomach by hydrochloric acids. Our bodies use protein to build and repair tissues.
Calcium 2%: Calcium dissolves in the stomach and is absorbed through the small intestine and into the bloodstream. Calcium builds bone and regulates the the expansion and contraction of blood vessels.
Iron 4%: In the stomach, iron is changes into a form where it can be absorbed in the small intestine. Iron is essential to blood production.

I chose popcorn from my pantry. The main nutrients here are fats, carbohydrates, and protein. This popcorn is broken down by the digestive system. First, it starts off with ingestion (mechanical and chemical), then propulsion (swallowing and peristalsis), mechanical breakdown, chemical digestion (mainly in the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder), absorption (main goal - into blood to cells), and lastly defecation. The nutrients absorbed by the small intestine which is transported by blood to the cells. The cells will then use the converted chemical energy to build tissues. This is one of the reasons we have to eat food. Things that are not absorbed (ex. fibre), are escorted out of the body by defecation.

The main nutrients are carbohydrates, fats, and protein in this nutrition fact. Nutrients are essential to our body, as they provide us with energy, are the building blocks for repair and growth, and are the substance necessary to regulate chemical processes. Our body collects the nutrients from food by a process called digestion (happens in the digestive system). Digestion is a 6 step process: ingestion, propulsion, mechanical breakdown, chemical digestion, absorption, and defecation. Digestion involves the breakdown of food into smaller and smaller components, until they can be absorbed and assimilated into the body.

When we eat this, our body converts the chemical energy stored in these nutrients to feed our muscle and heart cells. The components that are not absorbed, are excreted from the colon in stool (feces). This entire process is done by our digestive system in six steps: ingestion, propulsion, mechanical breakdown, chemical digestion, absorption, and defecation.

As food travels from your mouth into your digestive system, it's broken down by digestive enzymes that are transformed into smaller nutrient components that your body can easily absorb. This breakdown is known as chemical digestion. The nutrients are absorbed into the bloodstream through channels in the small intestine. The blood works to distribute these nutrients to the rest of the body.

What is not absorbed, where do the extras go?
- The food not digested and absorbed passes out of the body as waste product.

Main Nutrients:
- Sodium (380 mg/ 16%)
- Potassium (220 mg/ 6%)
- Carbohydrates (5g/ 2%)
- Protein (1g)
- Vitamins (A and C)
- Iron (2%)

Sodium:
Absorbed while in the small intestine. Sodium (which is an electrolyte) helps to maintain the water balance in/ around the cells. It also plays a vital role in muscle and nerve function. Sodium tends to cotransport with glucose and amino acids when it is travelling to the intestinal columnar epithelial cells.

Potassium:
Potassium helps regulate the fluid balance, muscle contractions and nerve signals in the body. Potassium can also help with reducing blood pressure and water retention! Potassium is absorbed in the large intestine, where 90% is absorbed and 10% being excreted from the body through urination and sweat, a little is also lost through defecation.

Carbohydrates:
Carbohydrates are absorbed in the small intestine after being broken down by carbohydrase enzymes (since carbohydrates are macromolecules). After it has been broken down into sugars, the absorption can begin. Carbohydrates are digested in the mouth, both chemically (saliva) and mechanically (teeth, tongue). They are also chemically and mechanically digested in the stomach (with involuntary contractions and stomach acid). Carbohydrates provide energy to muscles. They are, in fact, the body's greatest energy supplier.

Protein:
Proteins, much like carbohydrates, are macromolecules which are broken down by the protease enzymes, which turns protein into amino acids. Proteins are digested in the small intestine as well as the stomach, and after absorption in the small intestine, protein (now turned amino acids) will be used to help build and repair tissue, as well as make enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals.

Vitamins A and C:
Vitamins are digested through the stomach and the small intestine, and proteins act as their carriers as they travel through the body. Vitamins are absorbed in the small intestine and are used to heal wounds, give you energy, shore bones, and help your immune system. However, they have many different roles, and they differ depending on the type of vitamin.

Iron:
Iron is digested in the stomach and the small intestine. In the stomach, Iron is exposed to stomach acid and is then changed into a form that can be absorbed by the small intestine (mainly the duodenum, but there is also an absorption "site" nearing the end of the small intestine). After being absorbed, Iron plays a key role in blood production, as it is an important component of Hemoglobin.

What are the main nutrients?
- carbohydrates
- proteins
- fat

How are they absorbed and how are they used?
Carbs are absorbed in the small intestine and are turned into simple sugars. The simple sugars are then absorbed into the bloodstream and liver to be used as energy.
Proteins absorption mostly occurs in the duodenum and proximal jejunum. Pepsin, an enzyme, helps break down the protein into smaller amino acids. Protein is then used to build and repair tissue and is the foundation for bones, skin and muscles.
Fat is absorbed into the body through the small intestine where bile helps break it down. It then becomes energy for the body to use. Fat can also store energy and be used to insulate the body.

What is not absorbed and where does it go?
The food and nutrients that aren't absorbed go to the end of the digestion process and is passed out of the body through defecation.
