Both police and the press searched high and low for information about Elizabeth Short's private life. One reporter managed to contact her mother, Phoebe Short, and persuade her to give up details. Phoebe was under the impression that Elizabeth had won a beauty contest in Los Angeles, and that she had been contacted to help with a write-up on the winner. Only after grilling Phoebe for information did the reporter explain the true nature of the situation.

The killer contacted the police, communicating through letters cut from news clippings. With this delivery came Dahlia's possessions at the time of her death. These were rinsed in gasoline to prevent the LAPD from identifying any fingerprints.

Based on the evidence gathered since 1947, the prime suspect in Elizabeth Short's case is George Hodel: infamous socialite, alleged assailant, and physician to Hollywood stars. He was known for the abuse and sexual assault of his daughter- crimes of which he was acquitted. Hodel was never charged for the murder of the Black Dahlia. This is likely connected to his notoriety for bribing the police.
