Have each child get a Laptop or iPad to start the activity off with. (Non-native English speakers, and gifted students) will follow the directions as normal and the special needs children will work in a group along with the para.

Take time to explore the website https://www.choosemyplate.gov/MyPlate and get familiar with the tabs and different places the website will take you. Important! Look at the tab My and it will give you the options of the 6 food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins, dairy, and oils.

Next, they will watch this video about MyPlate. It has Spanish and English, so it is a great video if there are non-native English speakers in the classroom. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eg0uVx0Uilo ·

They need to answer the first content question on their own, it is an opinion question. ·

Next, find the answers to the essential and content questions. They will need to explore the site to find them. ·

Next, they will need to create a chart of healthy vs. unhealthy foods. There needs to be 10 foods in each category for healthy and unhealthy foods, so there needs to be a total of 20 different foods. Special Needs Learners for the last activity will receive flashcards with healthy and unhealthy foods and they will have to sort them to the best of their ability. ·

All students will take the time at home to make and complete a poster of a healthy meal that is within the guidelines of MyPlate. They will present it to the class and explain why they chose the foods that they did and why they are in each specific food group. They will be graded on neatness, use of class time, having the required elements on the posters, and what knowledge they gained from doing it. The MyPlate can be made from whatever the child wants. The only guidelines that they need to follow is stated above.

Gifted students will have a small extra assignment: They will need to go home and make a real play of food that follows the guidelines of MyPlate and then take a picture and bring it back to show the teacher.

Special Needs Learner:

Make flashcards of healthy and unhealthy foods. Have them sort the cards to the best of their ability.

Have them work in groups and ask the para if they have questions about what they should do next.

It’s important to give immediate feedback to these students.

Make a checklist for the activity and they can mark off objectives as they go.

Non-Native English Speakers:

There is a video that incorporated english and spanish for MyPlate. This video inclued more than one language and it represents many types of people.

Having documents that are translated into their native language could be a huge help to them and how they learn new material. Another great idea if available in your district, a teacher that speaks another language could come in once every few weeks to help with a lesson in another foreign language for the children that need it.

Gifted Students

For gifted learners, it is important to challenge them so for this activity the gifted children would be done faster than the rest of the class. In class they will start their posters while the rest of the children finish the assignment. Gifted students will do the poster as well as put together a meal that shows the MyPlate standards, and take a picture to turn into the teacher.

With this activity, challenging the gifted students get to test their knowledge of MyPlate and give examples of what they could be eating by putting together a real plate of food and taking a photo of it for the teacher.
