I have told students, after reading an essay, that their vocabulary and sentence structure show how smart they are. I try now to focus more on a specific strategy they are using or how they have included a new vocabulary word in their response.

I told a student that he was smart because he answered the reading questions correctly after he decided to misbehave. I told him that he was too smart for that behavior.

I have told a student that they were smart because they wanted give up as if they couldn't do a task. I told him he was so smart and can do a lot of things.

Recently, we were reviewing adding/subtracting fractions. When going over a question on the board, I asked who could tell me what the new denominator would be. A students raised their hand and gave the correct answer. I responded with "you sir, are a smart cookie" and gave him Dojo Points

I actually try and tell my students they are capable rather than smart.

This made me really think if I have ever told a student they were “smart”. I try my best to refrain from saying that to students because I know other students are always listening and I do not want them to feel as if they are not “smart”. I use words like “you are doing a great job”, “good job on ….”, “I liked the way you did …..”. When I do my affirmations with my students, I do have them repeat to themselves that “I am smart, I am intelligent and I am someone”. I am sure without actually thinking about or noticing it, that I have made my mistake before.

I have in the past as a way to continue to foster a positive climate. Not sure if students hear this all the time after a certain grade.
