To advertise for this group,the plan is to email a survey to Senior students who seem to be struggling academically to get their input on what is causing them to struggle and what they think may help them to struggle less. One question on the survey would be if they are interested in participating in a small group. For students who respond to the survey that the would want to participate in the group, another email would then go out to them inviting them to join.

Group Dynamics

The population for this group is senior high school students who are struggling academically due to the lack of time management skills, stress management skills, and goal-setting ability. The dynamics of this group are unique due to the special population of grade level and academic difficulties.
Stage 1: focus will be on building trust between the students and establishing a safe relationship amongst participants. As a result of the student survey, a common trend was students feeling stressed at school. This could mean the students will be uptight about participating in the group. The counselor will have to be careful to not cause additonal stress on the students which could hinder participation. Group guidelines will be established with a counselor led discussion and presentation of the group rules. One of the guidelines discussed will be confidentiality and I will further explain the limits to my confidentiality if something is disclosed in the group that I must report.
Students will complete a pre-assessment to assess their prior knowledge of grade importance, organizational skills, stress-management skills, & goal-setting.
Stage 2: this stage will include activites encouraging the students to open up and share with the group the things in their life that are causing them stress and the reasons why they are struggling academically in order to help one another and see that they are not alone. Some of the activities students will participate in are stress-management skills such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, & journaling. Time-management skills such as learning how to use a planner, assignment notebook, or calendar. Students will also decide on one short-term goal to work on. Students will be able to demonstrate stress coping skills and will bring their calendar/assignment notebook to the meetings to gauge progress.
Stage 3: for group closure, the plan will be for the group to review and discuss goals set in the previous meeting and to check for obtainment of their goal or the progress toward reaching the goal.
The group will also reinforce and review their newly acquired skills to assist in academic improvement and student success. Students will discuss previous meetings and will share at least one thing they have learned and have started using/will begin using as a result of participation in the group.
Students will complete the post survey to assess knowledge acquired as part of participation in the small group.

The leadership style that would work best with this group is Participative. This approach would work best with this population of students because they are older students who can contribute and give input, but would still need guidance from an adult. This style will allow students to participate in activities and discussions to acquire new skills and also be given support from the counselor (Cherry, 2021).

Learner-Centered Skills: The certified school counselor applies the knowledge base to promote the educational, personal, social, and career development of the learner as outlined in The Texas Model for Comprehensive School Counseling Programs. The certified school counselor must:(3) counsel individuals and small groups using appropriate counseling theories and techniques in response to students' needs;

This legal requirement states that ceritifed school counselors should counsel individual and small group using the correct techniques and theories. In addition, it states this should be done in response to students' needs. This demonstrates the importance of needs assessments.
