Before this lesson, I only had little knowledge about what architecture is. I knew it as a study of design and aesthetics. I thought that the form is more important than the function. I thought architects work towards the structure of a building and the function would just be an adjustment. Another thing that I knew about architecture was having the skill of illustrating is useful. The architect should also have knowledge on mathematics, physics, and engineering. But of course creativity would always be a factor because it serves as a tool to build the foundation. The design of the architecture would also be based on the period it was made. So the details and the aesthetics would also reflect the purpose and motivation of the architect. One of the most important lessons I learned was that form and function go together. In architecture we pay attention to detail and

design, which is based on principles and concepts. Concepts such as harmony, balance, emphasis, and rhythm. The element of space is also an important factor, because it reflects the purpose and centralizes the community. With that, beauty is the output, because it reveals the form and function, which at the same time gives an impact to human life. I learned that architecture contributes to the human knowledge like history, science, and the arts. Now, when I see a certain building, I can give greater appreciation towards it because I am equipped with the basic knowledge of how architecture works and how it gives relevance in our lives. Architecture enables a community to develop, because it gives us inspiration to innovate and satisfy the needs of the people. This is done by creating buildings with a purpose and meaning. Examples are museums, churches, universities, etc. The buildings that we see everyday would not be possible without the study of architecture which continues to evolve because of the work of man.

I am also curious on the criteria of what critics consider as a work of art in terms of architecture. Lastly, I want to learn more about the lives of the famous architects, because I am curious on how do architects get their inspiration.

Though this fine art was made to commemorate their lives, it is also considered beautiful because of the interconnection between the contrasting figures. According to Gilson (1966, p. 91), “the statuary represents, or creates, discrete objects in space, it cannot avoid juxtaposing them in the void”.

Moreover their facial expressions capture “various states of despair”, but there is no eye contact between them (The Met, n.d.). For the bronze casting, it highlights the draperies and creates an element of rhythm.
