Learning to swim

Jeanette does not know how to swim, but quickly comes into contact with the water, and quickly needs to learn to swim. When her dad throws her into the water and tells her to learn to swim, and almost drowns, so her dad pulls her back in, only to throw her back in. He pulls her back out of the water and states,

“if you don't want to sink, you better figure out how to swim” (Walls 66). This quote states how Rex, the dad, wants his children to learn fast and how he does believe in him children. In Jeanette's case, she is always making the best of things. She didn't necessary complain about her dad continuously throwing her in, and if she didn't make the best of things, she would most likely give up all together.

Braces

Jeanette thinks her worst feature is her teeth, they were not rotten or crooked, but they stuck straight out. Everyone in her family, including mom and Lori, said that she over exaggerates and that her teeth actually gave her character. Since her family doesn't have the money for braces and they have never been to the dentist, she decided to take matters into her own hands. "What i needed, was braces... Since i have been babysitting and doing other kids homework for cash, I resolved to save up, until i could afford braces myself" (Walls 201). When Jeanette realizes how much the braces cost, she decides to just make her own braces with a metal coat hanger, rubber bands, and some napkins. This scene is significant to the novel because Jeanette is being self- sufficient and doing things by herself to make her own life better.

Jeanette as four year old, was cooking hot dogs by herself. When section two starts off, it really puts an impact on the reader them self. "I was on fire" ( Walls, 9). As a reader when you first read this statement, it really makes you wonder what happened, and whats going to happen; it pulls you in. When reading this section, Jeanette really gives the reader a outlook on her home life and makes one recognize the differences in her own life, compared to when shes in the hospital. She also shows how she is not afraid of things that could hurt her, because she went back to cooking hot dogs when she arrived home from the hospital. Jeanette's perseverance and self sufficiency was showed throughout this section.

When the family arrives in Welch, mom decided to put them into a elementary school near the outskirts of town. When they walked into the principals office, he doesn't speak like the Walls do, so the kids are placed in special classes. When she arrives in her English class, her teacher decides to pick on her by saying rich white girls like her do not have to follow the rules. Jeanette defends herself by saying, Insufficient information to draw a conclusion" (Walls 138). I think this scene is important because although Jeanette kept being BULLIED, and hit and kicked, she never said anything mean or hurt the other girls back. She told the girls they were all equal, and kept her peace, which shows Jeanette's kind character as a whole.

When Jeanette is home alone, she hears a knock at the door, nearly startling her. When she opens the door, a man carrying a file folder is standing there, wondering where Red and RoseMary are. When the man asks where they are, Jeanette replies, "Mom and dad wouldn't want me to let you in, until they talk to their attorney" (Walls 193). When Jeanette says this, it makes the reader feel as if she is grown up, and is not afraid. She is a twelve year old, alone at home, and a strange man from child services pulls up and she was not afraid. I think Jeanette chose to put this scene into the book to show that even though shes a young girl, shes not afraid of many things, and that she can defend herself.

This scene is important to the novel because this is one of their first actual homes they stay in, and where they start the "glass castle" dream THE DREAM OF THE GLASS CASTLE STARTS BEFORE MOVING TO PHEONIX

On a sharp turn, Jeanette was flung from the car and became injured, but her father kept driving, seeming not to have noticed. "I thought you were going to leave me behind" Jeanette said (Walls 31). Dad finally came back and got her and a while, he made a joke about her nose being a "snotlocker" (as a way of apologizing). This scene is important because this is a time when we as readers realize Jeanette will love her father and forgive him no matter what.

At age 5, Jeanette's family moved to Blythe, California. She attended school, where she was eager to read and learn, until she was inevitably bullied for it by her classmates. One day on her way home from school, Jeanette was bullied by a group of Mexican girls who beat her up. The next day they tried to attack her again, but her brother was able to fend them off for her. This scene is important because it shows the support her brother has for her and the relationship her and her siblings have. MISSING PAGE NUMBER AND DIRECT QUOTE/PARAPHRASE
