Every year, in early October, my Nana, my family, and I prepare our Remember Me table, our Ofrenda, in our home. We do this to remember and pay respect to our loved ones who are now in Heaven, but will always live in our hearts. On our Ofrenda, we have a picture of my Grandpa Charles, my great Grandma Lupe, my Great Abuelo and Nana, and our dogs Teddy and Oreo. I like our Ofrenda because it has a lot of bright colors. We also have small objects of the things they liked to eat, like pan dulce and enchiladas. Even though I’m too young to remember them while they were here on Earth, I still miss them very much. That’s why our Remember Me table is so special to me. I also like to watch the movie “Coco”, partly because it helps me understand why it’s so important to have our Ofrenda.

This is our families first year making an ofrenda. We have known about this tradition but never knew all the details. Avery found it interesting, how each day you add something to the ofrenda. On our ofrenda we have friends, family and pets who we miss so much. This will be a new tradition we plan to keep each year! It is important to keep their memory alive. Last night we lit the first candle and put a bowl of water to begin welcoming our pets.

This is the first year Edgar helped his family put together an ofrenda. He enjoyed learning about family members he didn’t get a chance to meet and also share memories of those family members he did remember. Edgar helped put the petals of the marigold flowers on the floor to make a cross. Edgar said the petals smelled sweet and filled the whole room with their scent. Edgar also helped decorate the table and added a sugar skull. We all agreed this was a great experience as a family to talk about our loved ones who are no longer with us.

We just started doing this as a family. We recently had a death in the family, my husband's grandmother. We all went to the funeral and it was really hard on our daughter. This altar helped honor her memory and it also started a conversation about her ancestors, who they were, and how they were connected to our family. We also placed our passed beloved pets, especially Buddy who died suddenly.

Our altar was done in remembrance of Yaqui, our pet fish. She was really loved by us and we miss her so much. Here is Gia’s Remember Me altar. We started creating ofrendas when we moved from New York to California, inspired by the traditions many of Gia’s friends shared with us. Learning about their culture was such a meaningful experience, and we’ve continued this practice for the past seven years. A meaningful family project we did at home was creating a Día de los Muertos altar (ofrenda) in honor of my grandpa. It became more than just a craft—it was a way for all of us to come together, share memories, and celebrate his life.

My grandpa loved the Green Bay packers, he even had a hat that was a piece of cheese. He was religious and loved his Catholic faith. We will always cherish his laughs, and jokes and the way he cared for us.
