The pull-out model: focuses on the students grammar development, vocabulary, reading, speaking, and writing in English. Mostly for elementary

ESL class period: same focus as the pull out model but this is for middle schools and high schools. It is a whole-class period so they are not pulled out of other classes and miss work.

ESL Recourse center: Focuses on development of grammar, vocabulary, reading, speaking and writing in English using instructional secondary language acquisition strategies. This is a center students from several schools or classrooms will go to that concentrates on ESL materials.

have your students match names to items from around the room using the English language

have your students match vocabulary words to definitions in the English language

have the students read aloud in the English language

keep in contact about the students progress

Ask any questions that you may have about anything as a parent. It is important for all your questions to be asked and answered.

be involved at home as much as possible, as in homework, reading, etc. Some parents of students in the ESL programs may not speak good English, or English at all. If possible, as the parent, try your best to help with homework as well.

read and tell stories in their native language.

ESL self-contained: Focuses on the students development of grammar, vocabulary, speaking, and writing in English by using instructional secondary language acquisition strategies. Used more at the elementary level, a student will have an ESL teacher that they spend most of the day with, and sometimes it is a group of students with this teacher.

ESL team teaching: focuses on the development of English skills or academic subjects through the use of sheltered instructional strategies. This program is for the upper elementary level and it is where one or more certified ESL teachers teach. Each teacher is assigned a different content and/or language art.

Structured English immersion: Focuses on the development of academic subjects. This is where there is a separate classroom for just English language learners; every topic is taught to them in English with a few explanations in the student's native language. There is no specific ESL instruction; training can be provided by multiple certified ESL teachers.
