As family, you can support a person dealing with mental health through hearing them out without any judgement at first. Though you may not understand their worries, it is always best to give them comfort and unbiased advice. As friends, you should hear your friend out and give them advice as you would be in the same age group as them, so would be able to relate to their struggles. Try to do things to cheer them up as well.

The process of healing is more about reducing the amount of bad days compared to good days than completely getting over it, as there will always be some things that remind you of what you went through.

Social media creates unrealistic standards, leading to social comparison which causes feelings of insecurity. Blue light from screens and stress from content disrupt sleep, which is crucial for mental health. Cyberbullying can cause severe emotional distress, fear, and withdrawal. Many people also have FOMO which is the fear of missing out when seeing others on social media.

However there are also positive aspects such as it connects people across distances and offers support networks. It can also help find peer support and raises awareness for mental health issues. You may find people in similar situations as you on social media. They may have tips or solutions which can be effective for you as well.

Individuals have different personalities that could explain why they may face mental health issues very differently. Some individuals may feel more comfortable talking to others, while others may want to keep it to themselves and bottle it, which may lead to suppressed emotions causing other underlying mental health conditions to trigger. Another factor may be environmental; some people may have a stable and healthy environment with supportive family and friends, while others may have an unstable environment with no support, causing their mental health to decline.

Saachi 12E

The video we had watched today did not acknowledge that in predominantly brown cultures It is considered taboo to talk about mental Health. Brown parents are more likely to be emotionally negligent as mental health is framed as a trivial, often non existent issue. As brown communities are more about collective community, there is also an involvement of fear of bringing shame to the family, and a worry of what people will think. Friends may also exhibit this, especially majorly brown friend groups where it becomes apparent that the group’s dynamic is not built upon being supportive during times of mental struggles and more upon being there only when the mood is light. Because of this, mental health struggles in cultures especially brown cultures may be ignored until it is too late.
