The documentary talks about Amish people, their way of life, which we think is a really unique way of living, simplicity is the most important thing, being in harmony with their community and their religion. However their lifestyle also impulses strict limits on individual freedom and resists change. In this documentary we see the way they approach technology, social structures, etc. While their traditions offer a stable and close-knit knit community, they also present challenges in adapting to an evolving society.

One of the defining characteristics of the Amish is their emphasis on simplicity and separation from mainstream culture. Their resistance to modern technology is rooted in their religious beliefs, which prioritize humility, hard work, and a focus on community over individualism. By forgoing automobiles, electricity, and many forms of modern communication, the Amish ensure that their lives remain centered around faith, family, and manual labor. This creates a lifestyle that many view as peaceful and fulfilling, free from the distractions and stresses of modern consumerism. Their self-sufficiency, strong work ethic, and dedication to traditional crafts and farming contribute to a way of life that values patience and persistence.

This documentary also shows how much passion they have for their way of living. Though people outside the way of living would see it as a limitation on personal freedom. Amish communities operate under strict religious and social rules, which dictate everything from clothing styles to career choices. Education is typically limited to the eighth grade, as further schooling is considered unnecessary for their agrarian way of life. This restriction can limit personal growth and opportunities, making it difficult for individuals who might want to explore careers outside of farming or craftsmanship. Additionally, the practice of shunning—where individuals who leave the faith are cut off from their families and communities—creates a strong social pressure to conform, making it challenging for members to pursue a different path. Another tradition is that they marry people from the same community, them being cousins, or relatives.

The lack of technology in Amish life has a profound impact compared to the modern world. Without electricity, their daily routines require more manual labor, from farming with horse-drawn plows to washing clothes by hand. We saw a lady saying that even though washing machines would be easier since it could rain, the church prohibits them. Without cars, travel is slow and limited to horse-drawn buggies. While this lifestyle fosters patience, hard work, and closer social connections, it also makes certain aspects of life more difficult, such as emergency medical care or access to broader educational resources.

Ultimately, the Amish way of life is a balance between preservation and limitation. While their dedication to simplicity and community is admirable, their resistance to modern advancements raises questions about the cost of maintaining tradition. We also saw many people devoted their lives to the farm life and religion, in order to mantain the tradition. Their lifestyle offers a perspective on what it means to prioritize values over convenience, even in a world that is constantly evolving.

The Amish way of life is often seen as a model of harmony and simplicity, but it can also be viewed as a limitation on individual freedom. The Amish prioritize community, faith, and a simple lifestyle, avoiding many aspects of modern technology and individualism. Their close-knit communities create a strong sense of belonging and mutual support, which can be comforting and stable. However, their strict rules limit personal choices, such as career opportunities, education, and even basic freedoms like using the internet or choosing one’s beliefs. While some might admire their peaceful way of life, others could see it as restrictive, especially for young Amish individuals who may never fully experience the outside world.

Amish resistance to change is both a cultural strength and a potential obstacle to evolution. Their commitment to tradition helps preserve their values, preventing their culture from being influenced by trends that might weaken their community. By resisting modern technology and societal changes, they maintain a way of life that has remained stable for centuries. However, this resistance can also prevent growth and adaptation. In a world that is constantly evolving, refusing to accept change can make it difficult to respond to new challenges. For example, their reluctance to embrace modern medicine and education may put them at a disadvantage compared to the rest of society. While their traditions give them a strong identity, too much resistance to change could make it harder for their way of life to survive in the long run.

The lack of technology has a huge impact on daily Amish life compared to the modern world. Without cars, electricity, or the internet, the Amish rely on manual labor and traditional methods for farming, communication, and daily tasks. This can create a slower, more physically demanding lifestyle, but it also means fewer distractions and a deeper connection with family and nature. In contrast, the modern world revolves around technology, making communication, work, and education much more efficient. While the Amish value simplicity and community, their rejection of technology means they miss out on medical advancements, global information, and many opportunities that modern society offers.

Overall, the Amish way of life is a balance between preserving tradition and limiting personal freedom. While their resistance to change keeps their culture strong, it can also hold them back in an ever-evolving world. Their rejection of technology shapes their daily lives, making them different from the modern world in both positive and challenging ways.

-Ana Pau and Vicky

The Amish way of life is generally viewed as both a paradigm of simplicity and harmony, and a limitation on individual freedom. Their refusal to use modern technology fosters communities and a focus on family, religion, and hard work. Simplicity for them keeps them from being distracted and encourages peace, but it can also limit individual freedom by limiting exposure to modern amenities and opportunities.

Their refusal to change is a two-edged sword on the one hand, it preserves cultural tradition and strengthens groupidentity, keeping their identity intact in a constantly changing world. On the other hand, it can inhibit advances in education, medicine, and innovation, potentially keeping them insulated from advancements that might improve their standard of living.

Lack of technology highly impacts daily life. As much as the world today survives on instant communication and technological advancements, the Amish employ manual effort and word-to-word communication. This pace improves community but barsaccess to modern resources, etc medical interventions or knowledge materials, whichcould help them keep up with evolving challenges.

Finally, the Amish lifestyle is a compromise between preserving tradition and meeting the evolving needs of society, and it demonstrates the tension between simplicity and progress.

Have you ever wondered what life would be like without technology, social media, or even electricity? The documentary Amish gives us a deep dive into the world of the Amish community, a group of people who have chosen to live apart from modern society, following strict traditions that have remained almost unchanged for centuries.

The Amish live by a set of rules called the Ordnung, which dictates everything from the clothes they wear to how they interact with the outside world. They reject most modern technology, believing that a simple life brings them closer to God. Instead of cars, they use horse-drawn buggies. Instead of smartphones, they rely on face-to-face communication. Their days are filled with hard work—farming, carpentry, and home-making—emphasizing community over individualism.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Amish life is Rumspringa, a period when Amish teenagers are allowed to experience the outside world before deciding whether to commit to their faith. Some choose to leave, embracing modern life, while most return, finding comfort in their traditions.

Watching this documentary makes you reflect on how different yet similar we all are. While the Amish live without modern luxuries, their values—family, faith, and hard work—are things many of us strive for in our own ways. It raises an interesting question: Could you live without technology if it meant a simpler, more connected life?

The documentary “An Amish Man” gives a close look at how the Amish live and how different their world is from ours. It shows how they focus on faith, family, and simple living, but it also explains the challenges they face because of their strict rules. The Amish choose tradition over modern life, which helps them stay true to their beliefs but also limits their freedom and ability to change with the world.

One of the most interesting things about the Amish is how they avoid modern technology. Unlike most people who use phones, the internet, and cars every day, the Amish choose to live without these things. Instead of using tractors, they farm with horses, and instead of washing machines, they wash clothes by hand. This makes them hardworking and independent, but it also makes life much harder. In the documentary, an Amish woman says that even though a washing machine would make her life easier, her church does not allow it. This shows how strict their rules are when it comes to technology.

The documentary also talks about the Amish rules for daily life. They have strict guidelines on what to wear, what jobs they can have, and how much education they receive. Most Amish children stop school after eighth grade because they believe more education is not needed for their way of life. This means they do not have many job options outside of farming or woodworking. Another strict rule is the shunning, where people who leave the Amish faith are no longer allowed to talk to their family or friends. This must be very painful and makes it hard for anyone who wants to leave the community to start a new life.

Another important part of Amish life is marriage. They mostly marry people from their own community, and sometimes that means marrying distant relatives. This keeps their traditions strong, but it can also cause health problems because of a small gene pool.

Even though their way of life is very strict, the Amish are happy and proud of their traditions. The people in the documentary love their way of life because it gives them a strong sense of purpose and belonging. But it also makes you question, should people hold on to tradition even if it limits their freedom? The documentary makes you think about whether it is better to stick to old ways or move forward with the world. Their dedication is impressive, but at the same time, it is hard to imagine living without the modern things we use every day.

The Amish community is a unique and deeply traditional group known for its simple way of life, strong religious beliefs, and resistance to modern technology. Originating from the Anabaptist movement in Europe during the late 17th century, the Amish migrated to North America in search of religious freedom. Today, they primarily reside in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Indiana, where they continue to uphold a lifestyle that emphasizes humility, hard work, and community support. Their way of life stands in stark contrast to the fast-paced, technology-driven world, making them a fascinating example of a society that prioritizes values over convenience.

At the heart of Amish culture is the concept of Gelassenheit, which translates to humility and submission to God’s will. This belief influences their daily lives, including their dress, work, and relationships. Amish people wear simple, modest clothing that reflects their values of humility and separation from mainstream society. Men typically wear dark suits, broad-brimmed hats, and suspenders, while women wear long dresses and bonnets. The emphasis on modesty extends to their rejection of vanity and self-promotion, as they believe in living without unnecessary distractions or material excess.

One of the most well-known aspects of Amish life is their rejection of modern technology. They avoid electricity from public grids, automobiles, and other modern conveniences, believing that such advancements could lead to individualism and weaken the tight-knit community structure. Instead, they use horse-drawn buggies for transportation and rely on traditional farming methods for their livelihood. However, some Amish communities have adapted to changing times by allowing the limited use of technology for business purposes. For example, certain Amish groups permit the use of telephones in designated booths or barns to maintain communication without integrating technology into daily life.

The Amish educational system reflects their values of simplicity and practicality. Children attend one-room schoolhouses and receive education only up to the eighth grade, focusing on skills necessary for their way of life. Rather than pursuing higher education, young Amish people learn through hands-on experience, often working alongside family members in farming, carpentry, or other trades. Their economy is largely agrarian, though many have expanded into small businesses such as woodworking, furniture-making, and craftsmanship. These enterprises allow them to sustain their communities while maintaining their values of hard work and cooperation.

Religious faith plays a central role in Amish life, with church services held in homes rather than separate buildings. These gatherings occur every other Sunday and consist of long prayers, hymns, and sermons, reinforcing their commitment to their faith and one another. Community support is a fundamental principle, evident in practices such as barn raisings, where neighbors come together to help build structures for one another. This collective mindset ensures that no member of the community is left to struggle alone, reinforcing their belief in mutual aid and cooperation.

Despite their resistance to modernity, the Amish face challenges as the world around them evolves. Economic pressures, technological advancements, and increased interactions with non-Amish society pose potential threats to their traditional ways. Some communities have found ways to adapt without compromising their core beliefs, such as engaging in business while maintaining strict rules about technology use. However, these adaptations are carefully considered to preserve their culture and values.

The Amish way of life serves as a reminder of the importance of community, faith, and simplicity in an increasingly complex world. While their traditions may seem restrictive to outsiders, they provide a sense of stability and purpose for those within the community. By choosing to live apart from mainstream society, the Amish demonstrate that happiness and fulfillment do not necessarily come from technological progress but from strong relationships, shared values, and a commitment to a way of life that honors their beliefs.
