Thermal energy is energy produced when particles in an atom vibrate fast, and the temperature goes up. The hotter the temperature in an object, the more thermal heat that an object has. The amount of the thermal energy in a substance varies between the temperature and the amount of matter in an object. An example of thermal energy is a hot bowl of soup. The bowl of soup has a lot of thermal energy in it. That’s what makes it hot.

1) Can energy change?
A- Yes, energy can change. One type of energy is able to turn into other types of energy. For example, if lightning strikes a tree (electrical) it will make the wood atoms vibrate faster and cause fire (thermal energy). This is a great example of changing energy because the electrical energy does not disappear, it just changes into thermal energy.
2) Can energy be created or destroyed?
A- No energy CANNOT be created or destroyed. According to the law of conservation of Energy, energy cannot be created or destroyed. Energy can however change forms and transfer energy into other things.

3) Can a object transfer more than one type of energy?
A- Yes, a object can transfer energy to another object. Think of it this way. When you get struck by lightning (or even get electrocuted) electrical energy from the lightning bolt into your body and causes you to have the electrical energy (as well as pain and suffering).
4) How does energy flow in a system?
A- In the picture below you will see a example of a science project my teacher had me do. In this project we can see that the little girl is using energy to make the water boil. The energy in this system transforms into different types of energy and makes the energy flow. The energy starts off as chemical then becomes mechanical, electrical and then thermal. That is how the energy flows threw the system.
