-Hello class! My name is Julieta Alviarez. I am currently a sophomore in college, and I am in the Miami Dade Honors program. My major is business administration, and hopefully, I will transfer to a university next semester. I didn’t enjoy reading books until two years ago when I read “The Alchemist” by Paulo Coelho. It wasn’t until that day that I developed my passion for reading. I have lived in four cities and studied in different institutions throughout my childhood. I am Latina (Venezuelan), and moved to the US when I was 12 years old. I have lived in Miami for five years, lived in Orlando for one year (my last year of high school), and then returned to Miami for college. I have two peculiar hobbies: birdwatching and spending time in nature. Spending time outdoors is my escape from daily stress. I am working in a real estate company as a marketing assistant, and it is the first job that I’m enjoying. I am currently developing a marketing campaign for the company, and I am the one in charge of running the marketing campaigns. I have a golden retriever that is ten years old, and I consider her my best friend.

-Hi Isabella, nice to meet you! I also babysat as a part-time job. How was your experience? Sometimes, dealing with infants can be a huge responsibility and time-consuming. My experience with babysitting was good, but it depended on the child you cared for. Some children are troublemakers! I also enjoy being around animals, and your dog Benji looks adorable and, if I'm right, is a Goldendoodle. I have a golden retriever.

-Hello Isabel, I identify with you because I am also Venezuelan. Additionally, I go to the gym and enjoy working out, although this week, I have not gone since it was midterm week. I also have a dog, as I mentioned before (a golden retriever), and my dog also brings me joy. It is incredible the impact a dog makes on a human life.

-The concept of efficiency in a food chain, like the example of the mouse and the snake, is fascinating. In this case, species lower in the hierarchy (like the mouse) are often more energy-efficient, which is fascinating. It emphasizes the delicate balance of nature and how energy flows across ecosystems. It is incredible to think about how primary producers, like plants, efficiently turn sunlight into energy. Then herbivores can access this energy with relatively minimal loss compared to predators higher up the food chain. This efficiency reflects the fundamental idea of the trophic pyramid and emphasizes the interconnectivity of all living species. Understanding this process can have significant ramifications for conservation and the long-term viability of our ecosystems. It serves as a harsh reminder of the intricate web of life and the significance of preserving biodiversity in order to sustain the efficiency of these natural systems.

-Hello Isabel, I agree with your response about what energy represents and the choices we can make. One major issue in your analysis that stuck out to me was emphasizing the broad effects of our energy decisions. It is critical to remember that these decisions have far-reaching consequences on a global scale, not simply in our immediate surroundings.

Furthermore, I appreciate your acknowledgment of the lecture's emphasis on transitioning to more sustainable and renewable energy sources. This transformation is critical not just for meeting rising global energy demand but also for minimizing the negative environmental and social consequences of traditional fossil fuels.

-Hi Eveling, I agree with the first part where you mention that "Energy is all around us." "Energy is all around us." This term captures the significance of energy in our daily lives and its function in our existence. It is an excellent approach to capture the reader's interest right away.

Your statement regarding the various energy resources available to us is enlightening. As you correctly stated, reliable access to varied energy sources is critical for enhancing the global quality of life. It is a well-written argument for the importance of energy variety.

You make an excellent argument about the value of environmental care and the preservation of resources like trees and their habitats. This link between environmental conservation and energy availability is significant.

-For the discussion, I chose the video "Top 10 reasons not to move to Miami." Many immigrants, residents, or students are deciding to move to Miami. Seventy-nine thousand five hundred thirty-five residents have moved to Miami from 2020 to 2022, contributing to the city's overpopulation. Nowadays, if you want to move to Miami, you could find better life quality somewhere else. One of the significant issues the video discusses is the extremely high prices for living. An average calculates that if you want to live comfortably (as a single person), you would have to generate more than 2000$ only for housing. The cost of living in Miami is 50% more expensive than the U.S. average. The second reason not to choose Miami as a living place is the rude people. As an immigrant coming from another country to Miami, I can understand this. I don't entirely agree because there are exceptions, and as you find rude people, there are also nice people in the area, but there are a bunch of people who seem to be obstinate a high amount of time. Multiple store workers are rude to their clients, making them feel like a nuisance.

The third reason that I related the most from the video was the parking crisis in Miami. Going to a restaurant, mall, or even to a park can be a struggle for most of the citizens. Most of the parking area is non-free, and as a resident who has lived in the area for more than five years, I can assure that the majority of parking spots have to be paid by pay-by-phone. The payment of only one hour is $3.25.

-Hello Isabel!

I agree with what you mentioned about Florida's vulnerability to hurricanes. I also have had anxiety with all the climate changes that we have had. I was in Florida when Hurricane Irma occurred, and getting resources such as water, food, or gas was a struggle. Almost every year, a hurricane comes to Florida, and the city and the people are affected. Some of the results of having a hurricane are canceling work, classes, and day-to-day actions.

-Hello, Eveling, I agree with your response. Miami has become one of the most expensive cities in the U.S. Groceries, dining out, entertainment, and transportation are relatively high in Miami compared to other cities. Day-to-day actions are becoming more expensive each day. I liked that you mentioned the traffic in Miami. As a beginner driver, I always get on my nerves since there are several irresponsible drivers in Miami. Many of them go high-speed or even drunk. I learned how to drive in the city, and I don't recommend it to other first drivers due to the dangers.

-Hi Daphkar, I agree with your assessment of the critical issue of food loss and waste in the United States. The statistic revealing that approximately 33% of food intended for human consumption is wasted emphasizes the urgency of addressing this problem. Your insights into the environmental consequences of food waste, including carbon dioxide emissions during production and the production of methane in landfills, highlight the far-reaching impact on climate change.

Moreover, your connection between food waste, climate change, and the resilience of agriculture and supply chains is enlightening, especially in the face of increasing severe weather events. Your argument for reducing food waste, with its potential benefits such as enhancing food security, improving economic efficiency, and mitigating climate change, presents a compelling case for immediate action. In conclusion, your comprehensive perspective deepens understanding and underscores the need for a concerted effort to combat food waste for a more sustainable and resilient future.

-I appreciate your thoughtful perspective on food loss and waste. I agree with the need for a collaborative effort to address this issue comprehensively. In addition to the solutions you mentioned, another crucial aspect is promoting and supporting local food systems. Encouraging the development of regional markets and supporting local farmers can reduce the reliance on long and complex supply chains, minimizing potential waste points. Moreover, fostering community engagement through initiatives like farmers' markets and community-supported agriculture can create a direct connection between producers and consumers, raising awareness about the value of food and the importance of minimizing waste.

-The two points I found fascinating were the risks of using AI and engineered pandemics. The biggest catastrophes in human history have been from pandemics. As we experienced in 2019, the coronavirus pandemic significantly threatened humans. An estimated 3.8 billion people got infected by COVID-19 in the last pandemic. Biotechnology allows us to create and modify germs that could lead to pandemics. Without a doubt, a pandemic can be worse than a World war, making it a considerable threat to humans. The use of AI could become a potential risk if it's not controlled. Most dangers come from human actions, so limiting AI can be a valuable tool without being a risk to humanity. But if humans don't use AI adequately, it can lead to AI empowering the world and replacing tasks that humans do.

Your candid take on the potential threats, be it from nuclear disasters, climate change, or the impact of AI on employment, is spot on. It is refreshing to see someone tackle these complex issues head-on. Your call for collaboration hits home; it is true. We need to come together to navigate these challenges. Controlling AI power is especially crucial – who holds the reins matters. Your positive outlook, urging us to engage in these difficult conversations, is inspiring. In a world often filled with uncertainties, your emphasis on shared responsibility for our safety strikes a chord. Here is to hoping more people join the conversation and work towards securing a safer, more resilient future. Cheers to collaboration!

-Hello Daniella, I agree with you entirely on the intensity of this week's topic. The exploration of whether humans could face extinction is undeniably thought-provoking. Your breakdown of the four major threats, from the ominous introduction of the atomic bomb to the looming risks of nuclear war, climate change, pandemics, and unaligned AI, paints a stark picture. It is wild to think about the fragility of our existence, whether it is through human-made existential risks or natural calamities like asteroids and super volcanos. Your acknowledgment of the potential dangers posed by biotechnology and unaligned AI hits close to home, especially considering the rapid advancements we are witnessing. The notion of our fate resting in the hands of systems we have created is fascinating and, admittedly, unsettling.

-Choosing eco-friendly clothing offers many benefits, contributing to both personal well-being and the planet's health. Environmentally conscious fashion reduces the industry's ecological footprint, addressing issues such as water pollution, excessive resource consumption, and chemical use. Sustainable fabrics, like organic cotton and recycled materials, promote biodiversity and decrease reliance on harmful pesticides. Beyond the environmental impact, eco-friendly clothing often prioritizes fair labor practices, fostering ethical working conditions and supporting communities. Embracing a shift towards sustainable fashion aligns with the global movement toward environmental responsibility and encourages innovation in design and production methods. Fashion can evolve by embracing circular economy principles, emphasizing durability, recyclability, and upcycling. Brands like H&M and Zara are adopting transparent supply chains, enabling consumers to make informed choices. Additionally, a shift towards timeless styles and away from fast fashion's disposable trends can reduce the demand for constant production and consumption, ultimately benefiting both the consumer and the planet. Choosing eco-friendly clothing is a decisive step towards a more sustainable and ethical future for the fashion industry.

-I wholeheartedly agree with the points raised in this review. As exemplified by Zara and similar retailers, the fast fashion model contributes significantly to the environmental crisis, with an alarming amount of clothing ending up as waste annually. Introducing eco-friendly collections by major players like H&M and Zara is a positive step, but the ambiguity in terms such as "conscious" and "ecologically grown" raises skepticism about the actual impact of these initiatives. Critiquing widely used materials like polyester and cotton is crucial, as their environmental drawbacks, such as microplastic pollution and intensive resource usage, are well-documented. The call for transparency in labeling and supply chain information is particularly resonant, and the observation that H&M outperforms Zara in this aspect adds nuance to the comparison between these brands. Acknowledging recycling challenges and the need for consumers to question their consumption patterns and support transparent brands is insightful.

- I agree with your opinion of the contradictory nature of Shein's popularity. The brand's rapid rise in the fast-fashion industry and its substantial net worth are undeniably impressive, especially given its appeal to a vast demographic. However, your concern about Shein's negative impact on the environment and labor practices is valid. The glaring issues of underpaid workers, lack of contracts, and disregard for environmental standards are alarming. It's essential to recognize that the apparent affordability of Shein's products comes at a high cost, contributing to social and environmental issues. Your mention of Shein's role in greenhouse gas emissions and climate change highlights the broader consequences of the fast fashion industry. Consumers must be aware of these issues and consider the long-term implications of supporting companies with questionable ethical and environmental practices.

-The prominent fossil fuels, that is, coal, petroleum, and natural gas result from ancient organic material going through specific geological processes. They both have an organic origin, coming from plants and bacteria; they build up at places that are poor in decomposing circumstances. As a coal undergoes pressure and heat, it gradually moves from a state of being peat, lignite, bituminous and anthracite. On the other hand, fossil fuels result directly from the deposition of marine plant fossils in deep layers where it gets converted into liquid crude through heat, pressure and time. Natural gas is another fossil fuel that derives from decomposed organic matter at seabed level subjected to high temperature and pressure which results into formation of methane and other hydrocarbons. Although they have lived about million years; coal comes out of swampy condition, petroleum grows up in the marine ones; gas does look similar to petroleum but is also more gas-like-oriented one. As compared to coal that includes mostly carbon, petroleum is made of diversified hydrocarbons whereas natural gas includes mostly methane. These differences stem from particular geological processes and occurrences, which give rise to distinct nature of coal, oil, and gas – basic elements of the world’s energy system.

-Hello Sulcia, I agree with you. In the paragraph above you discuss, health and environmental damages involved in coal burning. Thus, the fact that it included the article by Savannah Bertrand gave more seriousness and richness to the debate as this highlighted the most undervalued costs related to burning fossils fuel like pollution and global warming, which are more than just market prices. Your paragraph demonstrates that these fossil fuels related externalities are everywhere in the process, right from extraction until combustion which then leads to diverse health problems and environmental impacts. The discussion of several health risks, like respiratory problems, heart attacks, and a scary figure of more than eight million deaths worldwide due to combustion pollution in 2018 also demonstrates how serious it really is. It is apparent that Sulia’s approach to addressing these issues is based on a more active strategy aimed at solving any problem. This is because the story emphasizes the need for energy saving, alternative modes of transport, and adjustments relating to lifestyles. Briefly, Sulcia’s paragraph captures scientific data, statistics, and workable measures in an overall package aimed at portraying how dangerous fossil fuels are to people’s health as well as the surrounding environment.

-Hello Yeni, your analysis of the environmental impacts associated with coal, petroleum, and natural gas extraction is comprehensive and well-articulated. The paragraph adeptly highlights the specific ecological challenges posed by each fossil fuel, emphasizing habitat destruction from coal mining, the risk of oil spills in offshore petroleum extraction, and groundwater contamination in natural gas extraction through hydraulic fracturing. The acknowledgment of shared challenges, such as air pollution and contributions to global warming, adds depth to the discussion.

-I choose the first video called: "Climate change and Storytelling." The video outlined the intensification of extreme weather events, including more frequent and severe hurricanes, heatwaves, and droughts. It emphasized the cascading impacts on ecosystems, such as the loss of biodiversity and disruptions to food and water supplies. The melting of polar ice caps and glaciers, as depicted in the video, poses a significant risk, contributing to rising sea levels and threatening coastal communities worldwide. Additionally, the video underscored the potential for more widespread vector-borne diseases due to changing climatic conditions. The overarching message conveyed the urgency of mitigating climate change to avoid irreversible consequences, urging collective action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and transition towards sustainable practices to safeguard the planet and its inhabitants.
