Pulled from Week 7 Discussion Post:

"The school counselor competency assessment was very eye-opening for me. It was nice to be able to use this assessment as a self-check tool to better understand my strengths and weaknesses, as well as improve my school counselor portfolio/professional development plan (American School Counselor Association, 2019, p. 94). Overall, I scored fairly well. My current profession as a school teacher had given me the advantage I needed entering the school counseling masters program as I already have an understanding of the educational system. Thus, I scored nicely on "B-PF 2. Demonstrate understanding of educational systems, legal issues, policies, research and trends in education" (ASCA, 2019, p. 96). Something I feel that I could improve on is "B-PF 5", specifically when it comes to "demonstrat[ing] basic knowledge... of differences in customs, communications, traditions, values and other traits among students based on race, religion, ethnicity... or other factors" (ASCA, 2019, p. 97). This isn't due to a lack of respect for these students, or the desire to advocate for them, but rather the lack of knowledge I currently possess on how to best advocate for them. I plan to gain a more thorough understanding of these factors through my continued work and through my practicum as it approaches" (Appleman, 2022).

Reference:

American School Counseling Association (2019).

Excerpt:

"According to The American School Counseling Association (2019), “the school counseling vision statement communicates what school counselors hope to see for students five to 15 years in the future”. For me personally, I want my students to be successful in whatever endeavor they choose. I want them to feel as if their k-12 education prepared them; whether it be to walk straight into the working field or to continue their education through college. I also want my students to understand and care for social justice issues by learning how to reflect on their own beliefs. According to The American School Counselor Association (2019), “by reflecting on personal beliefs, school counselors can promote equity and social justice”. I do not see why this cannot apply to the student body, as well. It is my hope that, after having me as a school counselor, my students will embrace and advocate for the equity of other cultures, races, genders, socio-economic statuses, and so forth" (Appleman, 2022, p. 4).

References

American School Counselor Association (2019).
Beliefs Regarding Students' Ability to Achieve

Pulled from Week 6 Discussion:

"The biggest belief that I have regarding a students ability to achieve is that all students can reach academic, career, and social/emotional achievement as long as they have the proper support. This belief is most aligned with "M 7. Comprehensive school counseling programs promote and enhance student academic, career, and social/emotional outcomes" (American School Counseling Association, 2019, p. 30). Without support, students may struggle to navigate their academic, career, and social/emotional needs as they have not yet learned to operate on their own. I believe that the support system that students so desperately need comes from their families, teachers, counselors, and other school staff. These support professionals must work together to foster said achievement; ensuring that each student has the proper tools that they (individually) need. So, in addition, I also believe in "M 5. Effective school counseling is a collaborative process involving school counselors, students, families, teachers, administrators and education stakeholders" (ASCA, 2019, p. 30)." (Appleman, 2022).

References:

American School Counselor Association (2019). The ACSA National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs, Fourth Edition.

The result of this test did not really surprise me as I am someone who has no bias against either heterosexual or homosexual people. If anything I was slightly surprised that I did not lean more toward having a preference for Gay people than Straight people. I say this only because I grew up surrounded by close-minded people, and I always resented the way that they would treat and/or speak to Gay people. I have friends who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community and do not tolerate family or anyone else saying anything to hurt or make them uncomfortable.

At first I was upset by the results of this test. It seems to show that I have a bias towards people who are considered overweight. I never thought that was the case but then, as I got to thinking about it, I believe that I let my own body images and low self-esteem about my appearance affect the test. It is not that I have any negative biases or thoughts towards people who are overweight, but it is that I have body dysmorphia that affects the way I think about myself. Regardless, I have to work on my own self-esteem so that I do not project it onto any of my future students.
