Losing your partner can be devastating and grief can turn the most impossible choices into possibilities. On top of processing the death of a loved one, you also need to process the loss of a shared future. After the initial shock of the loss comes denial, then anger and then bargaining for another chance which begs the question; how much is one willing to sacrifice for another chance? This is portrayed in Neil Gaiman’s short story “The Wedding Present” from 1999. Belinda and her beloved husband, Gordon, receive a wedding present in the form of a letter in which they read about themselves, but in another reality where their lives are derailing rapidly. This present serves as an anchor, grounding them in their actual lives and the lives they never lived. But when Belinda loses her husband, the present becomes a second chance. However, she needs to sacrifice everything to get it.
