as soon as he was deemed ready to start learning, duke jo called upon the best teachers and trainers he could find. grooming siwoo was tedious, the young boy not understanding why he was forced to sit still and recite passages and quotes from people he did not know of. all he wanted to do was run along the ocean, skip across towns and mingle with friends his age. his whines and tantrums were not met by patient, gentle soothing from his parents. rather, they were met with harsh scolding, telling him to "shut up" and not to "be a bitch". often times, when he sulks, instead of a head pat or hug, he gets whipped or thrown across the room. a "wake up call" as the duke would call it.

he used to think it was great that he could help his father. that was until he realises his father did need not help; he never does. the duke could make any command and it is to be fulfilled. failure to do so leads to punishment, evident from the red marks on his arms. siwoo wanted alone time, but his dad had other plans.

"know your place" gave sufficient reason to the duke to act the way he did.

thanks to duke jo's connections, siwoo managed to go through a trial for military eligibility and ended up being one of the youngest soldier in training in his camp. whispers surrounded him, some admiring his grit while others are jealous of his 'advantages', believing that he did not earn the rights to be enlisted. being in his rebellious phase but needing to prove his worth to every single cadet who judged him caused siwoo to spiral, the stress soon making him collapse one day while training; it was believed that he had a headache from all the pressure, the said voices in his head were just a hallucination to comfort himself. his collapse was covered up as a heat stroke and he was sent back to training without further help.

when siwoo failed to marry at the age of 21, his father grew even pushier, more impatient than ever to boast that his son was able to 'secure' a suitable wife. when news of the failed engagement of the eldest ryu son and eldest lee daughter got out, duke jo took this as a god-sent opportunity to strengthen his political power. he proposed an arranged marriage between siwoo and nari, reasoning that the two have been close since childhood and that his influence in the ministry of defense is as good as any other minister. tired of trying to talk his father out of the marriage, siwoo complies, knowing his bestvfriend wouldn't mind helping him. however, a small part of him is guilty for the arrangement as he felt like he was holding nari's love life back.

the rumours started to die down and siwoo started focusing on himself more, deciding not to worry too much about finding his "true love". reality was, the marquess had started to lose hope on finding the lady of his dreams. his mental health was worsening each day with no cure found. how could someone unstable like him ever be capable of loving someone? could he still protect the people he love? his worries started piling but he doesn't voice out his concerns.

determined to carve a future out for himself, siwoo has been hopping through loopholes and (trying to) standing firm on his believes, in hopes that he could finally get his father to change his mind about the whole social class division, as well as to finally follow his heart. due to his mental health that does not seem to improve, he has stepped back on duties as a general, giving the excuse of assisting his father and getting ready to take over as head of the family. after all, duke jo will be embarrassed and enraged if word of his eldest son being crazy got out. siwoo instead, has been more involved politically at the backseat, visiting his family's close friends and seeking out new partnerships while occasionally patrolling under the military, commanding a small group of officers to keep towns (mostly daegu) in check.
