This is a classic picture of an island in the middle of Guanabara's bay in Rio de Janeiro. Those traditional fishing boats from the locals were once enough to supply the neighborhood. Due to the pollution and the population growth, they become insufficient for fishing outside the bay and are slowly becoming obsolete.

This photo shows part of a famous historic acqueduct that is the same that brings water to the Vanvitelli's Reggia di Caserta waterfalls. The name of this acqueduct is not as known as that its source geolocation: it takes place in a 8.000 inhabitants small town near Benevento, called Airola, which is exactly where I come from. The souce name is "Fizzo" and it comes from a mountain called "Monte Taburno". This place for me has a special value due to the fact that it was were my family and I used to take water in my childhood. It also taught me the importance of human being "staying in touch" with natural landscapes.

The river is called Alz and originates from bavarias biggest lake. In the past people used to pass the river with wooden rafts. This tradition is now replaced by floating with inflatable dinghies or kayaks. It´s the perfect spot for swimming and there are a lot of rope swings next to the riverside. Floating down the river with friends and beer on a sunny day is a core childhood memory for me.

The Volta River is the main river system in the West African country of Ghana. It flows south into Ghana from Bobo-Dioulasso highlands of Burkina Faso. My province located in a watershred area with a river that run to the sea. Orchard with ditche is how farmer manage water. This ditche can be a retaintion pond during dry season. Drowned land

The lakes of Loosdrecht were once an agricultural area on peatland, until the industrial revolution made peat a worthwhile material to exploit. Meadows were dug up until the area's flooded, except for the strokes of land between the properties. This exploitation has resulted in a really unique and striking landscape.

Nowadays the area is amazing for the ecosystem and water recreation. The properties that remained are exotic (and expensive) places to live. For me, the area was a amazing place to go kayaking with friends or family on either a hot summer day or going really early in the morning to see the undisturbed peace of nature and the diverse species that live on the many islands.

Danube River Promenade

The picture i chose illustrates the Danube River crossing my romanian hometown, Galati. On the one hand, i chose this example because it is linked to numerous childhood memories and on the other hand, I have observed how during the years my on this promenade have changed, have woven between my mind just as the river does alongside the town. I have watched it being flooded, i have watched people fishing on its banks, the creation of a skatepark, how the ships cross the river and how the presence of the Danube has helped my town develop economically with the port area and Naval Architecture School. At present, being a graduating student studying urban planning I have began to wonder how this promenade and port can prevent flooding and how it can become a more interactive area, while protecting the river from intense pollution, which is yet another issue.

Andakíll – Ramsar site

Andakíll, Hvanneyri is a Protected Habitat Area and a Nature Reserve. It is a complex wetland located in West Iceland where the glacier river Hvítá and the Atlantic Ocean meet. When the tide is low, extensive mud, sand and gravel bars provide important feeding grounds for waterbirds. Along the river Hvítá are low plains created by regular floods containing high sediment loads and providing an important resting, feeding and breeding area for many bird species. The Agricultural University of Iceland is located in Hvanneyri where I lived during my Bachelor studies.
A Ramsar site is a wetland site designated to be of international importance under the Ramsar Convention which is an environmental treaty established in 1971 by UNESCO.

The white river, in all its 35.5km, starts from the Sharri mountains and goes along boulevards, cafés, the public park, living spaces and empties in the white lake of Drin. This water area is one of my city's legacies, meanwhile being my personal space with importance. I grew up in the freshness, site and hearing pleasantness this water medium brings. Along just being there, almost each festival in Prizren is held in connection to the river. We watch movies in a platform constructed above the river during "Doku fest", we raft through the river during "Bunar fest" and we listen to the best live music alongside it during "Ngom fest". Nevertheless, this river sometimes is anything but "white". Enjoyment and maintenance of the river have almost never stood at equal.

Water and religion are intricately woven in the pattern of lifestyle. Along with that due to the subtropical climate, the preference to the waterfronts is more on the socio-cultural aspects such as the bathing rituals. All the cities have their own identity achieved due to the dominance of water as a core element. It is believed that rivers are sacred, the kunds and step-wells have shrines and idols of God, lakes were used to offer prayers and worship water as God. Therefore, layers of activities along with built form typologies and their architectural responses exist altogether with the current era.

This is a place a few meters away from my home. It's one of the most visited places in my area, but somehow it can still remain really quiet, all you can hear is the water and the birds singing, and that's what I like about it. Every year the community who lives there cleans up all the area from the garbage that some people throw from the nearest bridge and that's drag by the water. My biggest hope is that in the future there'll be no more need to clean (I mean, it's our own home and who throws garbage on the floor in their living room?), but just to enjoy the place, as I often do.

This is the river of the city where I live and I was born, Sarno. It is best known as "the most polluted river in Europe". Due to spills from the sewers and industries along the river and its tributaries, there is no longer any form of life in the Sarno and the water cannot be used because it is dangerous to health. Over the years the river has then earned the nickname "Rio Pomodoro", because its waters sometimes turn red due to spills from the peeled tomatoes industry. An unacceptable issue, because the agri-food industry exists in many European countries and in all of them, thanks to technology, there are manufacturing processes with little impact on the environment.

Most tourists visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina see only the beautiful rivers Una or Neretva. The local population however is almost on daily basis confronted with the sights of the dissregardes, mistreated and poluted rivers. This kind of sight is normal in Bosnia for 90% of its rivers, and the problem is caused by the irresponsible citizens who like to dump their trash in the nature, by our government which isn't trying at all to come up with a solution for this problem, and private companies which tend to make illegal landfills and also import trash from other European countries and dispose of it in our landscapes.

The IJssel is a branch of the river the Rhine. It eventually flows in to the IJsselmeer. The last years this river among others has been given more space, as part of Ruimte voor de Rivier (Space for the River). To make sure that flooding's happen less often, due to the rising see-level, increase in rain and the quicker melting of the glacier sources. They did this by removing obstacles, hightening and moving dikes, creating by-passes, lowing groyne's, lowering floodplains and creating water retention area's.

In Hungary, Somogy county, the landscape is hilly, full with ups and downs. The valleys collect the rainwater and so became these beautiful wetlands. The water level is not permanent: usually in early spring these areas are filled up with water; then at the end of summer it is nearly dried out. These alder swamps give place for many species, especially amphibians, and are really important to hold back water. They also define this landscape. Unfortunately, I noticed in the past few years that these areas started to dry out- they do not get the water sources they need.

The lack of youth is situated in the center of Youth Park here in Bucharest, Romania. For me it doesn't represent just the image of nature, it also represents the childhood that I had in this park. I remember very well when I was little, I was walking with my bike around the lake many hours. I really like it because I was attracted by beauty of nature that we can create. Right now even small kids can enjoy it by doing photographs around the lake and feeding ducks. This picture shows Lake Avernus located in Pozzuoli, Naples, near the archeological site of Cuma. This water landscape is so fascinating for me because my uncle told me about the religious and mithological meanings of lake when i visited Cuma with my family. The word Avernus means “without birds” because it exists a legend: the water of lake contains a paricolar fumes that doesn’t allow birds to live. And also, this lake is the kingdom of the underworld in the Greek mithology and Lucifer’s abode in Dante’s Inferno . Despite its famous name “Avernus”, the lake is a place populated by birds and many freshwater species: perches, goldfishes, turtles, shrimps and frogs.

Sustainable multifunctional landscape

Vistula boulevards are located in the very center of Warsaw, the city where I spent half of my life. It is definitely a showcase of the city and one of the most attractive places. The boulevards were created thanks to people like us: landscape architects, to whom I am extremely grateful for implementing such projects. I wanted to share this place because it is of great importance to me and the rest of the residents. It is the most popular meeting place, a place for active and passive recreation, there is an educational path, moreover, the river banks and vegetation are the habitat of many species of animals and in particular they create a coherent and neat landscape and are a buffer zone between the noisy city and the naturally occurring river. The other side of the river is a riparian biotope, there are naturalistic walking and cycling paths and beaches. The proximity of water and nature in the city is very valuable and desirable. I just love visiting this place whether with friends, family, dog or alone.

Lake Urmia is very valuable in terms of environment and nature. It has rich ecological biodiversity and is marked by more than a hundred small and rocky islands, which serve as stopover points during the migrations of several bird species. This in turn has a significant effect on reducing its viability as home to thousands of creatures.

When I was a child, I traveled between near cities of the lake by ship and I supposed the lake horizon belonged to a pink ocean. Watching the flamingos’ migration in this view is an unforgettable experience for me, which has become rare these days.

This picture I took last year shows the typical countryside of Amsterdam with the Dutch canals and the windmills. Since the Netherlands is partly below sea level, these canals were used back then to drain the fields to enable farming. These strong typical liniar waterstructures you can still see today. Since I lived and worked in Amsterdam for the last half year, this place became very important for me to escape the hectic city.

The submerged park of Gaiola is located along the coast of Posillipo, so it is called both because it takes the name of the islet of Gaiola that dominates this stretch of the Gulf of Naples and because a submerged archaeological area is hidden under the waters.

The Danube is a huge river that flows through many countries. It originats from Germany and flows into the Black Sea.

Danube river is significant in our landscape as it divides Budapest into two parts (Buda, Pest). It is also a great recreational element for sports. People use the some narrow river basins for rowing. On the other hand due to its great location and Budapest's historical architecture, lot of cruise ships pass through.

However, in the city the there are not so many recreational areas where you can feel the water and be close to it as there are two busy roads passing at the embankment. There has been lots of initiatives to bring the water back to people. During the summer they close the area from cars and let people take over the place as a recreational area.

This photo shows the beach of Cuma, which use to be a wonderful place that now is almost abandoned. I have always been interested in this place because of its connection with history and the myth. Indeed, legend says that one day Apollo fell in love with Sibyl, a beautiful girl who hed divinatory abilities. To conquer her, the god promised to the young woman that he would fulfill all her wishes and then Sibyl took a handful of sand from the beach and asked Apollo to let her live as many years as the grains she had collected in her hand. But the girl forgot to specify that she wanted to live her whole life in eternal youth. Then Apollo, to preserve her form the passing of the years placed her in a cage inside the cave. Her voice was the only physical testimony of her presence that predict future events for a long time. The cave was discovered in 1932 and consists of a long stone tunnel in which there is an internal room, where Sibyl carried out her activity of oracle.

This image from google map shows the pattern of water and human made farmland for harvesting sea salt.
I was traveling through south-East of india and we were on a little off road area. Some how we got stuck on the way and I try to look on the map which was showing this image the Backwaters. A network of brackish lagoon and lakes laying parallel to the Bay Of Bengal cost of southern india, as well as interconnected canals, rivers and inlets.
I found that the backwater have a unique eco system: Freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from the sea. A barrage has been built, so salt water from the sea is prevented from entering the deep inside, keeping the fresh water intact. such fresh water is extensively used for irrigation purposes and from the sea water they harvest salt. Many unique species of aquatic life including fishes, crabs, frogs and mud skippers, water birds such as terns, kingfishers, darters and cormorants, and animals such as otters and turtles live in and alongside the backwaters. Also great mangroves, palm trees, shrubs, various leafy plants, and bushes grow alongside the backwaters, providing a green hue to the surrounding landscape.

This is not an extraordinary water, but it was pretty important for me while growing up. I live next to a big oil refinery. This creek crosses the north-eastern part of Ploiești city. Prospect Park Ponds + Lake

A system of ponds and creeks that culminate in a 24ha lake.

Three things I think are interesting:

It’s almost completely manmade, and is fed by city water. Phosphates in the water supply produce excessive algae blooms, and so last year a new type of bioretention filter was installed to cut down on toxic algae.

The large lake allows for many different and diverse opportunities for use at various points, many of which would never exist without the water. It creates many popular spots for exercise, barbecuing, wildlife viewing.

A big reason it was created was the popularity of ice skating in Central Park at the time. Because of climate change, it’s already no longer possible to go out on the ice during the winter.

Sabarmati River, India

Sabarmati River in the city of Ahmadabad, India which is a lifeline passing through the city to fulfil the need of the water for farming & drinking water. Earlier it was used as a place to dump the trash; rather riverfronts with beautiful landscapes are been developed to accommodate to fulfil the need of urbanscape as well.
The centrepiece of the Riverfront would have to be its two-level promenade. It provides an uninterrupted walkway for pedestrians that is a whopping 11.4 km long. The lower level of the promenade, which is accessible to the public at present, is close to the water level and is constructed in a way that serves cyclists and pedestrians alike, at the same time providing adequate access to water.

The Lake Salto

The Lake Salto has existed since 1940, when the 110 m dam was constructed to prevent floading of the lower valley and to produce hydroelectric energy. It is one of the widest artificial lakes in central-southern Italy and it characterises the omonymous valley, located between Lazio and Abruzzo regions. The submersion of the valley land cancelled its agricultural use by the river, and changed the socio-economical features of the nearby villages. Some of the villages were also destroyed and reconstructed by the lake banks. As an environmental consequence, the climate has become milder than in the past. Despite the outstanding landscape quality and the potential tourism, such territory suffers from demographic decrease likewise other internal areas of the Apennine mountains.

This picture of river Mura in Slovenia was taken last summer, after some rainy days (therefore it isnt as beautiful colored as usual). Mura is the only one of major rivers in this country which does not have any hydroplant build on it. I hope it stays like that, because it is a place of many beuatiful habitats and natural reserves, which should be presereved at the best.
