Childish Gambino is a writer, rapper, singer, and producer. His versatility is something that really inspires me. All his albums sound so different from each other as he explores many different genres and sounds. I love that Gambino is outspoken about controversial topics and isn't afraid to be brutally honest. We see this frequently on his debut album 'Camp', where Gambino 'adopted a ‘punchline rap’ style'. (Smith, N. 2020)

I'm AJ. A DJ, and aspiring musician, with a knowledge of many different genres, artist careers and musical trends. Both Childish Gambino and Timbaland were originally DJ's before becoming full time musicians. Their production styles and previous experience as DJ's are what really inspire me and interest me about these two artists.

Timbaland

Timbaland is one of my favourite music producers ever. His production style is immediately recognisable through his natural instrumentation, punchy ad-libs and bouncy beat styles. His music is upbeat and fun with some unique and genius production and instrumentation. I love the ways he integrates his own voice as an instrument through beatboxing. 'He is a master of sampling, of digital audio, and of creating beats and melodies using his own voice'. (MasterClass. 2021)

Kanye West

Kanye West has always been experimental with his music in the same way Gambino is. 'Over and over again, Kanye has an ability to push popular music’s boundaries, via hip-hop, while remaining commercially viable'. (Viney, L. 2023). The main similarity between these artists is how outspoken they are. They aren't afraid to speak their minds lyrically or publicly.

Eminem

Eminem is a rapper often referred to as the "Rap God". The main connection between Eminem and Gambino is their use of 'Alter Egos'. 'Eminem also used Slim Shady as an outlet, like he’d said, to vent his frustrations and work out some of his internal emotions'. (Kahn, J. 2022) Childish Gambino is the rap alter ego of Donald Glover, a comedian and actor.

LCD is an artist that is known to combine punk rock, electronic music and dance rhythms to create Dance Punk. 'They just strove to make good music-- borrowing from and honoring their sources, not being afraid to risk failure or humiliation'. (Pitchfork, 2011) Childish Gambino will often make hip-hop albums that consist of punchy beats and electronic production whilst maintaining the storytelling and witty wordplay of a rap song.

As a producer, he likes to create infectious funky and natural songs. He can effectively combine genres and sounds together to create memorable and distinctive music. Queen is a band that is immediately recognisable. From their catchy melodies and unique approach to rock music. They added a unique touch to the genre in the same way that Timbaland did with RnB and hip-hop. Both these artists had fantastic chart success. Their experimentation with genres attracted fans of different backgrounds leading to a massive industry impact. 'From ferocious hard rock songs like "Sheer Heart Attack" to gorgeous, moody ballads such as "Play The Game," from joyous pop, "Radio Gaga," to the operatic, "Don't Stop Me Now," the band excelled in any style'. (Baltin, S. 2022)

These artists are both multitalented, while Prince can play many instruments, Timbaland is a rapper, producer and songwriter. 'Prince recorded the great majority of his music entirely on his own, playing every instrument and singing every vocal line'. (The Irish Times, 2011) Prince was never afraid to be unique and to push the boundaries and expectations of the music industry.
