reimagined walking dead theme

trial and error: with this track it was mostly about getting guitar right and the bass line, it took 3 tries to get the bass line exactly to a point where i thought it fit well. i at first tried to write a complicated bass riff and i decided by listening to it as a whole that overall it made the track too complicated, so i stripped it back, reassigned the bass instrument i was using to a more gravelly harsh sound and stuck to a simple repetition of one or two notes. i feel like this suits the track a lot better and fits into the entire idea of the track. it also took a few tries to get the guitar part for this track to a point where if i were to change it the changes would be minimal. despite its quite repetitive nature i think it works well as a hook, after recording the same few notes over and over i decided to go back in and add a pitch change toward the end which i think really elevates the entire track to a better level.

structure and shape: so with this i did stick to a very simple structure as it is only 30 seconds or so long, this being because of the purpose of the track. i didn't want to over complicate it so i stuck with a simple scale and used instruments in a close to or near exact scale to create an overall effect for the track. with this i wanted to create a sense of isolation, a feeling of emptiness and the thumping heartbeat type drum in the background is to create a sense of panic along with the panning of each instrument and sound effect to give you the sense of being surrounded. the end of the short track tapers off until the heartbeat is all you can hear, making the track resemble the listener being completely alone, in sudden silence and this adds to the eerie feel of the entire track.

the track i created was purposed as an opening credits theme tune for the popular TV show The Walking Dead, hence its short nature. the track over all is supposed to represent the emptiness of the world post apocalypse and the fear and panic of the characters in the show, i used a drum to represent a heartbeat and quickly inserted sound effects to represent the noises and sounds of a world overrun by the undead. the bass in the background of the track is supposed to resemble static from radios and other communication that have been long abandoned and the entire emptiness of the track itself is to represent the isolation and dead nature of the walking dead as a universe, i used the panning of the instruments to create a sense of being surrounded like you would be by walkers (zombies) and to make a panicking type of feeling, centralising the heartbeat sound to make the listener feel as if that is thier own heart pounding in thier ears.

over all i feel the effectiveness and result from this track is very good, although if i had extra time i would go back and fix the abrupt ending to some of the instruments and would work on making the timing of the track a little better as a whole.

album interlude

trial and error: with this track a lot of things were added, taken away and changed. i recorded the bass line a few different times with different sounding basses until i was happy that this one fit the overall effect of the track. i added and took away samples and loops, restructured the entire song and decided to make it shorter too. ,

structure and shape: this track was supposed to have a build and then a fade out so that it fit the purpose correctly, i only used the midi keyboard for one instrument opting to use this for the bass only and stick with a simple bass line so that it wouldn't be too overwhelming. I used loops for the other instruments as i thought it gave a much more manufactured computerized sound to the track which was what i was aiming for. the first half of the track builds up, adding instruments and sounds until it gets to a mildly energetic pace before dropping the majority of them and settling down for the second half which much more relaxed using only one or two instruments before tapering off into a fade at the end with only one loop left remaining.

this track i created for the sole purpose of using as an interlude in an album or live show hence its short run time, , it has an energetic yet gradual build up which gets people pumped for the next song. I would use this before an extremely intense song to give a contrast and the song is solely purposed to be a filler between tracks to make sure people are still interested and wont get bored, i can imagine it would be completely different from the other songs on the album or being used in the show to grab peoples attention and keep it there until the next song plays and this is why there are a lot of loop and instrument changes throughout the track.

i like this track over all and think i created it well although if i had more time to work on it i would work on adding more midi played instruments which would add better depth to the song, i would also make it a little longer as i do feel it is a little short.

Tim Burton

trial and error: when i originally created the idea for this song i created two disjointed not well put together pieces that didn't flow how i wanted them to. i loved the bass line for it, but wasn't too keen on the rest. so the next time i went to compose, i truck to the bass line and rerecorded a completely different treble part for the right hand/ right end of the piano.

Structure and shape: I used the same bass line for the left hand notes as in my original idea, keeping it simple with only three notes used, then working from that. i kept the bass line the same the entire way through which gave something simple to work from as i wanted the treble or right hand notes to be more complicated. For the right hand notes, i created this piece to be played by two people, i stuck to a basic C scale but used two octaves of the same scale playing at the same time, requiring more than one player for the right hand notes, i feel as though this fits perfectly for the inspiration of the entire song.

The start of the song begins with just the bass line, the incorporates the right hand notes after the three note structure of the bass line is repeated four times. the treble line is a lot more upbeat than the bass line giving good contrast and the entire song is every so slightly disjointed to give the effect of two people playing at the same time.

The entire song was composed with the director Tim Burton and his main composer Danny Elfman in mind. I wanted to compose for one of Tim Burton's movies, they are usually musical and dark in theme, this song is short but dark themed to make it fit to this type of movie. I have always been inspired by the composition of The Piano Duet by Danny Elfman in the movie Corpse Bride which is why i chose to make the song i composed a song to be played by two people, i wanted mine to be a duet too. i also love the composition in the movie Edward Scissorhands, the contrast in the movie of dark and light emotions put into the composition of the movie's songs, i wanted to give the effect too, so i made the bass line more downbeat and the treble line higher and more upbeat to give that contrast.

This track is the one i enjoy the most and am most proud of, i think if i could have extra time on it i would re-record with a sustain pedal to give more depth to the song, but other than that i wouldn't change a thing.
