Critical Analysis

You will analyze an artwork that will inform your drawing and your ability to read art. Becoming visually literate teaches you to dig beneath the surface of what you see to determine something’s meaning, its value to society and its function.

Find answers to the following questions in your investigation:

1. What is the piece entitled?

2. What medium is used to create it?

3. How big is it?

4. When was it made? Was it made during a specific art movement?

5. How would you describe what you can see to a person who cannot see? Include details.

6. What elements of art or principles of design are dominant in the piece?

Elements- line, shape, form, space, color, texture and value

Principles-rhythm, movement, pattern, balance, proportion, variety, emphasis and harmony

7. Is there a color scheme? What is the composition like in terms of balance or strong lines running through it?

8. Look at the subject of the piece. What does it evoke or say to you? This is something that you will want to research as the time period could give you lots of info regarding the era in which it was created. What were the societal norms at that time?

9. Why or for what purpose was this piece created? This is the function and purpose of the piece. Was it meant to be decorative, educational, functional, promote social mores, religious ideas, or raise awareness of an issue?

10. What is the cultural significance of the piece?

Use the Art Story in the Library Guides on the portal, Google Art Project or any other scholarly website. Refrain from using Wikipedia.

The questions are worth 10 points each. Write the answers as a narrative in complete sentences. Make sure to cite your sources for both the image and the research sources in your sketchbook. Put the URL for the image underneath it.

=z?K

The colored pencil drawing, depicts my husband, Jason, and was inspired by Alfred Steiglitz’s photographs of his wife, Freida Kahlo. While we are sitting in close proximity here, at a local diner sharing breakfast, I have attempted to create a disconnect between the audience and subject. I chose to use a symmetrical, frontal view, like that of van Gogh’s “Portrait of Joseph Roulin”. With his face, down, not looking at the viewer, I attempted to convey Jason’s dislike for being in photographs and the center of attention.
