Travis Bickle is the outsider of all outsiders. He’s a loner who, despite his constant trying, just can’t seem to fit into the world around him. In the midst of the craziness of New York City, Travis is a lonely figure whose identity is intertwined with his extreme isolation. The cold environment of the city does not match up with Travis’ deep desire for the warmth of human connection. He experiences vivid flashbacks to his time in Vietnam. These haunting memories are clearly PTSD, and this causes him to constantly be on edge. He doesn’t sleep, so being a taxi driver works pretty well for him. It provides him with an opportunity to connect to people in the city while also allowing him to maintain a barrier between himself and the outside world. He becomes obsessed with the night life, leading to his need to clean the city the way he thinks is right. His desire to stand out and find out who he really is amongst the towering skyscrapers around him leads to that iconic mohawk scene. He’s armed with a taxi, expert knowledge of combat and the city around him, and one simple question: Are you talking to him? In an attempt to become a hero in his own perverted way, Travis begins taking all of his issues out on the criminal underworld. This includes his relationship with Iris, essentially the only connection he possesses with anyone on an emotional level. Iris is a young prostitute who crosses paths with Travis for the first time while he is working. He decides to try and help her out of her situation, and in a way, uses her as a proxy for the city as a whole, all the while transforming into a ruthless protector as she attempts to escape Sport and get back to her parents. This leads to him raiding the brothel armed to the teeth and killing Sport. After his contemplation of suicide, Travis finally gets to the recognition he craved: being seen as a hero for saving her.
