A theme of the play "Fences" is knowing the difference between responsibility and love. A situation that demonstrates this theme is when Troy gives Corey a lecture when he asks, "How come you ain't ever liked me?". Troy explains that he doesn't have to "like" him, but that he has to take care of him and keep his heart pumping because that's his responsibility as a father. Another situation could be when Troy had a child with another woman who dies during childbirth, and Rose agrees to help take care of it, not because she wants to help Troy, but because the child is innocent and she feels that that child needs a mother. The point is that you might not "love" or even "like" somebody, but as a human being you have a responsibility to do right by them and to have at heart the best intentions.

A theme of "A Raisin in the Sun" is how a prejudice society holds you back from following your dreams.

“What’s the matter with you all! I didn’t make this world! It was give to me this way! Hell, yes, I want pearls ‘round my wife’s neck. Ain’t she supposed to wear no pearls? Somebody tell me—tell me, who decides which women is suppose to wear pearls in this world. I tell you I am a man—and I think my wife should wear some pearls in this world!” p. 143

Walter wants to have nice things and for his family to have nice things, but it's hard for him to do achieve that dream because he works as a driver for a white man which obviously doesn't pay much.

The lyrics "I'm not yours are anyone's...I'm not even a little bit for you," relate to Beneatha because she does not want to belong to anyone. She makes it clear that she can make it in life without any man, especially when she says. " I’m not worried about who I’m going to marry yet – IF I ever get married.”

I think that this piece of art represents how Beneatha feels living as an African-American woman in this time period. The woman represents Beneath and the cage is society. She has all of these dreams and hopes for the future, but society holds her back because of the racism and prejudice that everyone had against her race and gender.

I do sympathize with Beneatha, because she is the type of person who prefers to get on through life without anybody's help. She just wants to make something out of herself, and when she is successful, she wants to be able to say she did it all by herself, and I respect that. As a character, her strength is her faith, because she believes that she will reach her goals and it seems that she won't stop until she gets there. A weakness of hers is also her faith, because she may get ahead of herself and set goals too high or unrealistic.

A strong character trait of Beneatha Younger is that she is independent.

“Get over it? What are you talking about, Ruth? Listen, I’m going to be a doctor. I’m not worried about who I’m going to marry yet – IF I ever get married.”

This quote demonstrates this character trait because it shows how she is not going to rely on a man to get her through life. The only thing she is worried about is getting her own money and becoming a doctor.

Beneatha Younger is the independent-minded , African-American sister of Walter from "A Raisin in the Sun" who yearns to make it big in life. She wants to be a doctor and doesn't let anyone tell her she can't. She wants to demonstrate how she can follow her dreams and make them reality even if she is a black woman in the 50s.

A way that these two plays are similar is their mention of dreams. In "A Raisin in the Sun", Beneatha has big dreams of becoming a doctor, but the thing that holds her back is society because of its prejudice towards African-Americans at that time. This is similar to Cory's problem in "Fences", because he also had big dreams. He wanted to play football, but his father would not let him, because he doesn't believe he will make it far due to his race.

A difference in these two plays is that in a "Raisin in the Sun", the main thing that holds the main characters back from their goals and dreams is society. The white people in their neighborhood don't want them there and it's hard for them to make a decent amount of money just because they are black. In "Fences", society is definitely part of the problem, but the main force that holds the main characters back is Troy. Rose says that she had bigger dreas before she met Troy, but put them on hold just to be with him. Cory wanted to play football, but Troy didn't him because he didn't get to reach his baseball dreams.
