The Nara deer park has a problem. The Friendship Association has called on people to adopt deer to save them from government-supported killing. Currently the government has set 120 box traps at the parks border. The purpose of trapping and killing the deer is to decrease the approximately 1200 deer that are destroying agriculture, rice, bamboo, and other vegetable crops. It isn’t known how many people will adopt deer, but this will protect Nara’s national treasure as of 1957. Every year tourists come to see the deer.
