In that class it's very common to have some students not pull their weight on group projects and other students pick up their slack. Although I have all the students evaluate themselves and their group mates and those evaluations affect their participation grade, I find that's not enough of a carrot/stick to ensure better group dynamics. I've resisted it up to this point, but I think it's time to have intentional instruction on effective group dynamics and to formally assess them on their ability to work collaboratively. Students are not motivated to complete something if they are not being "penalized" for not doing it. I still don't want to penalize students, but I have to find a way to create a more authentic experience around assignment submissions because my students cannot not submit and cannot not show up when they become practicing educators.
