         <description><![CDATA[<div>The thyroid interacts with many other glands of the body one being the parathyroid glands. The thyroid secretes calcitonin, which&nbsp;decreases blood calcium levels. The parathyroids secrete Parathyroid Hormone which increases blood calcium levels. These two glands both work to maintain the right amount of calcium in the blood to maintain homeostasis. Another gland the thyroid has a relationship with is the anterior pituitary gland. The anterior pituitary gland secretes Thyrotropic Hormone, which function is to regulate other hormone secretions of the thyroid. This is important because, without that hormone, the thyroid would not know when to secrete its hormones. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<ul><li>An 11-year-old female with no significant past medical history presented with symptoms suggestive of hyperthyroidism (weight loss, heat intolerance). She has also experienced a decline in grades at school. Family history is significant for thyroid disease in both grandmothers (both on thyroid replacement therapies).&nbsp;</li><li>Symptoms: weight loss, heat sensitivity, decline in grades due to lack of energy</li><li>Diagnosed using T4, 3, TSH, anti-TSH receptor antibodies, antithyroglobulin and antithyroid peroxidase antibody tests, known as thyroid function tests to see if the thyroid is working as it should</li><li>Can be treated by anti-thyroid drugs, radioactive iodine, or surgical removal of the thyroid</li><li>Symptoms are similar to other conditions so it can be hard for healthcare providers to diagnose without lots of blood tests being done; you can see an irregularity through ultrasounds sometimes, but patients often don’t think that anything is wrong until it gets more serious</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>

She states that her weight has gradually increased over the last year despite no change in her activity level or eating habits. She works roughly 8 hours a day as a nutrition assistant, but she falls asleep as soon as she gets home in the afternoon.</li><li>Symptoms include fatigue, lethargy, cold sensitivity, and can include secondary symptoms such as dry hair and puffy eyelids</li><li>Diagnosed using T4, 3, TSH, anti-TSH receptor antibodies, antithyroglobulin and antithyroid peroxidase antibody tests, known as thyroid function tests to see if the thyroid is working as it should</li><li>Treated using thyroid replacement medication, which brings thyroid hormones back up to normal levels</li><li>Signs of thyroid dysfunction are similar to depression, anxiety, and other conditions, so it can be hard to diagnose and as a result is often diagnosed late</li></ul><div><br></div>]]></description>
