]]> 2018-03-26 21:05:30 UTC https://padlet.com/rkazaw8807/uwd1ihfswwll/wish/246291919 rkazaw8807 https://padlet.com/rkazaw8807/uwd1ihfswwll/wish/246292646 The main character changed from being very stubborn at the beginning of the book to more understanding.  In the beginning Elizabeth was quick to judge about Mr. Darcy.  She met him once and had already decided that she disliked him.  While Elizabeth was at the Bingley’s taking care of her sister Jane, Darcy fell in love with her.  There was a time when Darcy had confessed his love towards her and proposed. Darcy says “In vain I have struggled.  It will not do.  My feelings will not be repressed.  You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”(171)  He had been rude to her in the past so she declined.  Elizabeth says “You could not have made me the offer of your hand in any possible way that would have tempted me to accept it.” (175) She wanted nothing to do with him.  She thought that he had tried to ruin Mr. Bingley and Jane’s relationship.  She then finds out the truth about Mr. Darcy and Wickham.  She realises she was obviously mistaken.  When Elizabeth sees Darcy again he acts pleasantly towards her.  Elizabeth soon finds out that it was Darcy who payed off Wickham and forced him to marry Lydia.  Elizabeth is grateful because her family's reputation will not be destroyed.  Elizabeth starts to like Mr. Darcy even though her mother dislikes him and his aunt does not want them to be together. Elizabeth says “He is a gentleman, and I am a gentleman’s daughter. So far we are equal.”   Darcy proposes to Elizabeth again and she gladly accepts.

A person may be proud without being vain. Pride relates more to our opinion of ourselves, vanity to what we would have others think of us." (16)

I believe this quote is important to the overall theme of the novel because it mentions pride. The word is even used in the title. Mr. Darcy has too much pride to show any affection towards Elizabeth and Elizabeth feels the same way.
