Rachel doesn't want him to go but because he is a man and a man of authority so she will have to send the boy.
Similarly, at the end of chapter 60, Nanberry must accept that his foster brother is to leave him and go on to a better education and life.

For a few minutes write yourself a list of other examples of women and Indigenous Australians being forced to do things that they do not want in the novel. There are a lot. Consult your past notes and the class comprehension questions.
Next, chat with the person next to you for a couple of minutes about your memories and list examples.
Finally, we will come together and discuss the examples and why they are in the novel.

Simply retelling what you’ve read is not enough!

-The first activity explores ways to be more creative than simply stating the feeling that the character is experiencing. We will look at an example of how I might go writing about the five senses. You will then make an attempt and are to email me it.
-After this we are to look at the five possible assessment tasks that you are all allowed to choose from. To do this we will work in a jigsaw activity.

•Imagine you are Rachel and you’ve just woken up in your bed the morning after Andrew has left to England. Describe the senses.

•The silence woke me. Usually my little one would have come bustling in with a new set of questions for me to grapple with for the day. No questions today, or tomorrow. I curl into a ball and accidently brush my husbands shoulder. I quickly recoil. He can’t help me; my son is gone. A salty taste touches my lips. It takes a few moments for me to realise that I’m crying. That’s all I’ve been doing since yesterday. As the sobbing begins to take over, a faint smell of something familiar wafts in from the direction of my door. A soft knock and my eyes snap open, taking in the scene of Maria holding some freshly baked bread. She looks into my eyes and all I see is a reflection of the sadness that is overwhelming me.

-I will email you the document with the exact conditions and time scale of the assessment but first let's look at the five options.

1. Write a diary entry from Maria AFTER the novel has finished. What is she doing in 1824? How has her life changed?

2. Write the introductory chapter of Surgeon White’s book Journal of a Voyage to New South Wales. What would White have to say in this opening chapter? Keep in mind what we know about his opinions of the colony. You may use quotes from the novel where appropriate. (please reference these) *You will need to research his book in order to complete this task.

3. Write an obituary for Nanberry. How would he be remembered? Include some discussion about his struggle with his identity. Ensure you identify who has written the obituary.

4. Write a newspaper article about living conditions in Sydney in the period that the novel is set. Use different characters perspectives as evidence.

5. 1) In Chapter 55 Rachel receives a letter from Surgeon White requesting his son be sent to him to England. Write that letter. Be sure to outline some of the challenges Surgeon White knows Andrew will face in the colony. Also reflect on the relationship between Surgeon White and Rachel.
