Fire is either destructive or a benefit to the society, depending on how people view it. In the beginning of the story, Montag was particularly intrigued by fire's beauty and loved how it changed things. He found a passion, which ironically is represented as fire, in his job as a firemen and devoted his life to it. Montag was influenced by Beatty's beliefs that fire cleans and makes you forget the bad memories as it burns away. After he witnessed the women burning with her books, his perspectives changed completely. (Destruction) However, fire also shows as a benefit that brings people closer together and provides protection. This quote, as described by Montag, shows that he viewed fire as comforting. This was also the time when the electricity went out and the single candle brought him and his mom closer together.
 
"Its real beauty is that it destroys responsibility and consequences. A problem gets too burdensome, then into the furnace it goes"(115).
