         <description><![CDATA[<div>Tereshkova was the first civilian person to fly into space, though she was honorably admitted to the Soviet Air Force to join the Cosmonaut Corps.<br>In 1961 Sergey Koroliov, the chief engineer in the rocket area, had the idea of ​​making a flight taking a woman into space. On February 16, 1962, Valentina Tereshkova was selected to join the female body of cosmonauts. Of the more than four hundred candidates.<br>Tereshkova was originally intended to travel first on flight Vostok 5 while Ponomaryova would follow her into orbit on Vostok 6. However, this flight plan was altered in March 1963. Vostok 5 would now carry a male cosmonaut, Valeri Bykovski performing the mission in conjunction with a cosmonaut aboard Vostok 6 in June 1963.
