Thoughts about this task

I'm a little nervous about this task to be honest. While I work in the arts industry, I do struggle to think creatively and find myself thinking logically instead. However, in saying that one of my favourite subjects in high school was media studies so I am hoping this brings back the creative side to my personality and allows me to explore that as an adult as opposed to my way of thinking when I was 16 years old.

What has this mind mapping process shown you about your product? The mind mapping process has shown me that there are both positives and negatives to owning a dog. The benefits highly outweigh the bad.

Was it difficult to explore your product so deeply? It was to a certain extent as a dog isn't specifically a 'product'. I tried to think outside of the square and come up with the benefits of owning a dog from an owner's perspective, but also from the perspective of someone who might be struggling with their mental or physical health.

Did you come up with any new ideas that will help you think differently about planning your promo clip? Yes, it made me realise that not everybody has the same perspective or love for dogs like I do, I will need to be strategic when identifying my target audience as dogs are not for everyone.

Headey B, Na F & Zheng R 2008, Pet dogs benefit owners health, Social Indicators Research, Springer. This book focused on the benefits of residents in China with dogs. In China, pets were banned in urban areas until 1992. It was a useful source as it highlighted the physical benefits of owning a dog.

Friedmann E, Son H & Saleem M 2015 The animal-human bond: Health and Wellness, Handbook on Animal-Assisted Therapy (Fourth Edition). In Chapter 7 of this book, the focus is healthy individuals, their habits and the introduction of animals as a form of companionship. It was a useful source as it highlights my message that dogs are excellent for mental and physical health.

Scheibeck R, Pallauf M, Stellwag C, Seeberger B 2011 Elderly people in many respects benefit from interaction with dogs, European Journal of Medical Research, Volume 16. This research highlighted the strong emotional and empathetic experiences elderly people had with their dogs, the connection they felt with their dogs and the improvements owning a dog made on their quality of life. This was a useful source as it showed the benefits for an elderly generation as opposed to just my target audience which is young people between the age of 18 to 35.

Epping, J 2011 Dog Ownership and Dog Walking to Promote Physical Activity and Health in patients, Exercise is Medicine, Volume 10, Issue 4. This article highlighted the importance of physical activity overall for its health benefits. It was a useful source as it recommended dog walking as an activity for patients because it was an enjoyable and sustainable form of exercise which highlights why dogs are good for mental and physical health.

Raglin J 2012 Exercise and Mental Health, Sports Medicine, Issue 6, pp 323-329. This article highlights that exercise can either be beneficial or detrimental on a persons mental health and mental state. This was beneficial for my research as its important to see varying sides of opinion and understand that exercise (in this case, dog walking) isn't an answer to eliminate someone's mental health problems.

She isn't this little anymore, but is still just as cute (I think so anyway). Demi is the most loyal dog I have ever met. Favourite things include: running through the dams in the pouring rain and eating wood stacked for the fireplace.

Dogs can be seen running over a paddock, birds are chirping in the air as the sun beams down.
A woman appears holding a Red Heeler in her arms, smiling from ear to ear with the dog trying to gently lick her hands and face.
A voice over starts to tell the benefits of owning a dog. The woman laughs and smiles as the dogs fall out of her arms and onto the ground below. The dog starts to run through the paddocks. A man appears holding a white dog, the white dog leans back onto him affectionately. The man laughs, he starts to tell the story of how this dog has improved his mental health. The dog almost cracks a smile. Walking forward is another woman walking another Red Heeler. The dog walks with its fluffy tail waving excitedly in the air. The woman tells the audience how the dog is her best friend and how she is so happy to have him. She jumps in her ute, with the dog beside her and she slowly drives off. A man appears with his little dog affectionately known as Fleabags. He comments on the size of Fleabags, explaining with a laugh that she likes to eat (alot!). He talks about his anxiety and how the dog has been a great friend for him since he was young. The video ends with shots of each person giving their dogs a cuddle, the end frame encourages the audience to either A) Go and give their dog a big cuddle! or B) buy a dog.

As I don't currently have Photoshop, I created my colour palette online. I decided to go with yellow as the primary colour, however it's almost a golden yellow to stand out as opposed to a lighter colour yellow which could be harder to see. I related my colour scheme to our farm, a place where we spend a lot of time outside with our dogs. The green reminds me of the green grass, and the yellow the sun which makes me feel happy and positive.

Personal reflection: benefits of owning a dog

I find that I am a happier person because I own a dog. If I have a bad day, I know I can go outside and give them a cuddle or run around in the backyard with them and I automatically feel better. A dog is always happy to see you - even if I'm just putting rubbish in the bin or grabbing something out of the shed I am greeted by three wagging tails, who want to cuddle and love me. They are defensive and loyal over their owners, always making sure they're okay. I do believe my dogs know when I'm sad as their reactions are indescribable. How a dog can know when a human is sad is crazy to think about, but they do. While they don't have the brain capacity to fully understand your problems, I do believe that dogs know the difference between their owners feelings and when they're happy, sad, mad, etc.

I found it interesting while researching my topic that I found more positive videos/articles for owning a dog and its benefit as opposed to negatives. While some people are dead against owning a dog, it appears the benefits of owning one outweigh any negative thoughts. This video summed up benefits of owning a dog in simple sentences, partnered with cute images of dogs and people, dogs and babies, etc. While I liked this video, I did find it hard to pay attention to as there was not any spoken words and the background music was rather dull. I would rather hear someone speak about the benefits and then outline them in the description box of the video.

An interesting approach from McCann Dog Training. In this video, they outline 6 reasons not to get a puppy. I find the video a little bit misleading, they aren't necessarily telling people NOT to get a puppy, they are just outlining the difficulties of owning a puppy. The initial slide shows a dog with a cross over it, implying that people shouldn't get a dog. If you were to see a preview of the video without clicking further you might get the wrong impression. However, while he does outline problems in this video, he also provides solutions for preventing some of them. I found it interesting that the video had more than 3000 views, however only 89 likes and 29 dislikes. This video would be beneficial for people who don't fully understand the responsibility that comes with owning a pet.

Rex was a dog my partner and I rescued from a poor upbringing which could have turned him into a violent, aggressive dog. Luckily, we took him in and he is the sweetest, most gentle dog we've ever had. His favourite things include sleeping, trying to get in the ute and chasing birds in the sunshine (he is never ever fast enough).

I want them to feel like dogs are highly underrated because of their benefits on a personals physical and mental health.

I will need to 'pull on the heart strings' of my audience. I want them to feel emotionally connected to the video and to the dogs starring in the video, along with the people and their stories. I want them to feel an overwhelming sense of love, admiration and happiness. I think the colours yellow and orange best represent these emotions. Yellow is proclaimed to be the colour of happiness and I want people to feel happy when they watch my video. I also think people can relate yellow and orange to being outdoors which is part of being a responsible dog owner as you will spend time outside with your furry friend.

I will evaluate my message's impact by having audience members fill out questionnaires after watching the video with specific questions. I want to know what emotions they felt when watching the video, why and did it make them want to purchase a dog or hug the dog they already own. I will then coordinate these results into a shareable graph which can be used by myself to determine my success within this assessment.
