Winston is in prison with ther criminals and proles. The prolesaren't free from Big Brother either, they are all watch. Tortureis an incredible effective way to break people. It can be done physically as well as emotionally. They deprive Winston from sleep and he doesn't even knows how much time is passing. They beat him up, kick him and knock him until he is unconscious. They use this methods on Winston because a mind is easier to control if the body is in constant pain. The verbal abuse is sometimes even greater than the physical abuse, and when used at the same time it would without doubt damage our sanity. Our brain makes association with what hurts us and what stops the pain, this way people are conditioned to certain things. Torture will break everyone's will if it is done correctly. Trauma is so intense that the brain will refuse to go back to things that caused so much pain, it would be a instinct, the will to survive would take over his brain. He will believe whatever he is told.

Yes! I believe that torture does work on people. I am not saying it should be used but it is a great way to get people to talk. First of all, they started off by starving Winston. Even when he tried to get a crumb of bread form his overalls the telescreen yelled at him. They are also depriving him from time, he doesn't know if it is day or night and that drives him crazy. They also beat him up pretty bad, broke his bones! OUCH!! All I just mentioned are physical tortures. Winston is also receiving psychological torture. O'Brien is trying to get some "sense" into him. He is drilling Winston's mind with the Party's mantra and try to put some "logic" into his brain. He is like rebooting Winston's brain so he can think in a perfect way. O'Brien is trying to take Winston's self-pride, honor, and loyalty, which he has towards Julia. The first step to get Winston to think in a perfect way is be getting rid of those feelings. After Winston sees how skeletal he looks, he is terrified and then he starts to believe anything that O'Brien tells him because he doesn't recognize himself anymore. After all this, he betrays Julia. Winston hates rats and they threatened him with those. He immediately said to put Julia in his place. That is when Winston and I, of course, realize that torture can make you do the unthinkable. Yes, this will work in real life setting because people can't handle that much. At the end of the day they will all cave in. Except for the strong ones!

In some places, torture is a method used to punish people for a crime they commit. In 1984, O’Brien says they torture them in order to brainwash the one who committed the “crime” and help them to cure and have a “healthy” mind. Torture can be done either physically or verbally. In 1984, O’Brien asks questions to Winston and he has to answer them with the truth. If Winston didn’t answer what they wanted to hear, then he would receive an “electric discharge”. While he is in prison the police torture him in many ways, he doesn’t sleep well, sometimes he is not allowed to eat, they hit him, etc. They do this to him because that way it will be easier to control him. If Winston is in constant pain, then it will be easier for him to accept and follow the things the party establishes in order to stop the torture against him. He would believe everything the party tells him in order to not suffer the pain again.
-Elsa

Winston was at least with 15 other prisoners, starting from proles, or criminals and some of them were party political prisoners. They were mostly proles, they were there because they might have done something bad. Big Brother is actually punishing them for not being sane, they were not being punished for the crimes that they committed, they care nothing about it, and they were punishing them to make them sane before killing them. No, the proles have no freedom, BB is watching them all the time, they are never free, and even though they believe they are. The fact of some proles being there clearly shows that BB is watching them as well. It is cruel how they are treating Winston, and how O’Brien betrayed him, and how they had people acting as normal human beings, but actually being secret spyes.

Who is all in Prison with Winston? What did each of them do wrong? What does this show us that Big Brother is actually punishing it’s citizens for? Do the proles actually have freedom as previously conceived? Why or Why not?Think back to what you know about torture and people’s effects that have gone through it based on your personal knowledge. Why do you think they use the specific kinds they do on Winston? What are they ? Do you think they are effective, or would be effective in a real life setting? Why or Why not? Do you think after being released Winston will be.
Winston was in prison with some other proles and criminals. as well there were some political party members in prison but they were there as spies I believe. the majority of them where proles but I don't know exactly the reason by which they are there. I believe that they most d something wrong that disappointed big brother. BB is really punishing them in sane and torturing them before they actually kill them. The proles don't have freedom at all because they are being watch by big brother as always and they are being controlled and getting tortured so they need to act and believe on what they are told to. As we know by movies or by definition when we get tortured we feel pain not only fiscally but verbally too. We know that if we feel pain we will do anything in order to stop feeling it. In this case I think that they are torturing Winston in order to haver a better control of him, and they do that by electrical discharges, they hit him they don't allowed him to eat neither to sleep and all of this affects a person. I think this will be effective in a real life setting and not doubts that at a certain point it will be effective with Winston as well. and I think that Winston will change , and that he will change the way he thinks about things , I believe he will never want to revel again and that he will do and think what ever BB wants him to do so.

Torture has been used by all cultures throughout history. Powerful ancient civilizations like Romans, Greeks, Persians and Babylonians would use some kind of torture to punish rebels or criminals. It is not a surprise that a nation like Oceania is drawn to use these effective and painful methods. Probably, O´Brien, as a top leader, has many years of experience with rebels and knows how to make them surrender. That´s why he tortures Winston with a backbone stretching machine that brakes his bones. Definetely, this torture is among the worst and most painful. The suffering is unbereable and its results show that ...Well, Winston ends up revealing everything he knows, even his private thoughts and memories. I bet that anyone would speak up if put under such pain and pressure. I doubt a machine of the kind used with Winston, would be as effective in real life. It would probably kill a person before making him/her talk, but in a alternate reality, it would be among the best. Winston´s good friend (O´Brien) says that traitors are converted before being killed, to avoid having martyrs. Thus said, if Winston is released, he will not be the same... he will be a ¨converted man.¨ We will see what happens next.

Winston was in prison with criminals and proles. The truth is that they are not free at all as Winston believed. All the time they are being watched and controlled...(governmentThey torture Winston to show him power is expressed most fully in forcing others to suffer, but more importantly to remake him into the party. They are using torture as a method to mentally, physically, and emotionally abuse Winston to wear down his brain and get him to do what they want. People are tortured usually to get information out of them, it can take a while to get the information out of the person but eventually the person gives up when they can't take it anymore. O'Brien uses Winston’s deepest fears, rats, to betray Julia. After that, he had nothing else to live for besides Big Brother, and has no other option but to give himself to Big Brother. I do think it's very efficient because in the book their government is completely controlled by the inner party which means it works. We often see in movies how people are tortured until the leak the truth, but this is also successful in the real world, and by saying that it doesn’t mean that I agree with people being tortured just to get real answers. I don’t think that Winston is going to overcome this one day, this will definitely mark him forever and it will be like a scar that he will carry for all his lifetime.

They are using torture as a way to get inforation from the prisoners so they torture them 'till they break and 'till they cannot take it anymore.

Wiston is locked in prison. Prison is not what he thought. The government is also controlling people and the proles in prison all the time. They are using the method of torturing in order to make Winston change the way the think, and to make him admit the Big Brother is the one who has the controll. They want Winston to stop rebelling and they make him suffer by not giving him food and even if the other try to give him some, they are watching them and they will not let them help Winston because they yell to them. That is physical torture. But they also used mental torture. O'Brian used the Party's mantra to get rid of his feelings. When Winston saw the skeleton he was scared and terrified. That was when he betrayed Julia, and tell them to put her in his place. I think that torture is an effective way to make people tell you what you want. Torture in the past have been used too get information of simply make people suffer. The effects of torture in people are traumatic, and cause mental damage in people's minds. I think they use specific kinds of torture on Winston, to make him know the consequences of his acts of rebellion against the government. Winston is tortured by being starved, by violence, then Winston is tortured by O'Brien using a machine called "dials," these a torture machine that is designed to stretch backbones until they break. No method was more effective than room 101. O'Brien challenges Winston to face rats, his biggest fear. I think these methods are effective in real life setting, because no one was to face such thing mentioned before. After those tortures, Winston was lucky and was released. I think that Winston will be more cautious now on.

Winston got tired and he confessed all things that he has done, and all his crimes. He feels disappointed because O'Brien is watching how Winston and he doesn't do anything about it. the methods of torture what they do on people is make them get tired of suffering and tell all that he has done wrong and confess all his crimes, this is a really good way of controlling people. BB uses specifics on Winston because he feels that his back bones are going to break and this is the only way that is more effective on Winston and makes him spit out everything h knows. I think that this was the most effective way that they could use against Winston in order to tell all the thruth.

Winston is in prison, he did not realize that he will end in jail. It is not something new that Oceania will use torture methods to punish criminals. Torture is the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or in order to force them to do or say something. O'Brien is the Love Department leader he has a lot of experience with torture methods. Winston was trap in a machine that breaks bones while O'Brien is laughing. Winston is in agony he cannot support anymore Winston starts confessing everything but the government was not satisfy with that they will not let him go free. O'Brien tell him that Julia has already confess a long time ago. It is really effective this method you cant even think the pain takes control over your brain and make you confess. It is really hard to survive with out telling nothing.

This happens because the brain makes the body do whatever it can to survive this led to Winston to talk about he knew. Winston is in prison with proles and criminals. Winston thought the proles were free but actually they aren't they were always watched by big brother. They deprived Winston from their sleep and he loses track of time, they kick him and beat him up until he faints. This is a very effective method because the brain is easier to control. Winston mind was very strong because he wouldn't say anything until his thought he couldn't handle it anymore or he would die.
