The U.S. was one of two main antagonists in the Cold War and they lost many soldiers and lots of money. The U.S. supported South Korea during the Korean War because North Korea was communist. The U.S. began the Bay of Pigs invasion to overthrow Fidel Castro and his communist regime, which was unsuccessful (infoplease). The U.S. joins the Vietnam war to stop the spread of communism to South Korea, and to the Dominican Republic (infoplease). We lost the Vietnam war. We then enter the Iraq war, which we also lost. The Berlin Wall then falls.

Harry Truman adopted the idea of McCarthyism. This allowed the government to arrest anyone who seemed suspicious of treason (McCarthyism). The U.S. government was also
anti-communist, which made the Soviet Union, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, and other communist states to turn their backs to the U.S. The U.S. populace supported the ideas of capitalism and McCarthyism. People who did not support McCarthyism were usually communists (McCarthyism).
