The biggest holiday in Italy is Christmas. Many people celebrate Christmas Eve with a huge feast, often featuring seafood (7 Fishes). The Christmas season lasts until Epiphany, January 6, the date when the Three Wise Men are said to have reached Jesus’ manger. Apart from Christmas, Easter is the most important date in the Italian year. It is celebrated as a religious and family occasion in much the same way that American families celebrate Thanksgiving. This is Easter being celebrated in Rome

Italian is a Romance language descended from Vulgar Latin, the dialect spoken by the people living during the last years of the Roman Empire. Italian has more Latin words than any other Romance languages, and its grammatical system remains similar to Latin. Latin is still the official language of the Vatican City in Rome.
There are roughly 12 dialects in Italy, 9 that are mainly spoken through the country. Each of the three main regions in Italy; Northern, Central and Southern is home to multiple dialects. For example Friulian is spoken in Frulia at the Northern end of Italy as well as Piedmontese. Sardinian is spoken on the Island of Sardinia in the south of Italy also spoken in the south of Italy is Sicilian.

Italian cuisine is characterized by its simplicity, with many dishes having only four to eight ingredients. Italian cooks rely chiefly on the quality of the ingredients rather than on elaborate preparation. Ingredients and dishes vary by region. Many dishes that were once regional, however, have proliferated with variations throughout the country.Cheese and wine are a major part of the cuisine, with many variations . Coffee, specifically espresso, has become important in Italian cuisine. (wiki)

No other country in Europe has as many volcanoes as Italy. This is because the Italian peninsula stands on a fault line. Three major volcanoes (Etna, Stromboli, and Vesuvius) have erupted in the last hundred years. Below is a picture of Mount Stromboli; it is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth and has been erupting almost continuously since 1932. Because it has been active for much of the last 2,000 years and its eruptions are visible for long distances at night, it is known as the "Lighthouse of the Mediterranean". It is among the world's most visited volcanoes. (geoology.com)

Shroud of Turin

The Shroud of Turin is an ancient piece of linen cloth believed to bear the faint imprint of a male body, perhaps Jesus Christ after he was killed. It has been in the Turin’s San Giovanni Cathedral for at least 420 years. While scientists have determined the shroud was made no earlier than the 1200s, others continue to debate when and how the shroud was created. The Catholic Church has neither formally endorsed nor rejected the shroud, but in 1958 Pope Pius XII approved of the image in association with the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. Pope John Paul II called the Shroud "a mirror of the Gospel". (Randomhistory.com)(Wikipedia.com)
