While she was being sold from slave owner to slave owner, she was separated from her family at the age of 9. In her teens she was united with Thomas, an enslaved man. While in slavery, and they had 5 children beginning at 1815.

In 1827, a year before the NY law for freeing the ensalved, she ran away after being subjected to harsh labor and violent punishments. Her infant Sophia, the youngest of her children, was with her while she went to the nearest abolitionist family.

The Van Wageners bought her freedom for $20, which now is almost $700 in America. They then helped her sue the return for her 5 year old son, who was illegally sold into slavery in Alabama.
