Apart from “basic policing, which means the upholding of law and order by the police force, there were no big additional security measures. Starting from the late 1960’s there were a few hijacks and terrorist attacks after which security got a small level up, like extra identification protocols and armed federal agents on (commercial) flights. A little later in the semi-early 1970’s plane passengers had to pass through a metal detector before boarding the aircraft. 

Until 9/11 the main focus was to make sure not to inconvenience passengers, but in the following months security levels had risen exponentially, having armed military personnel safekeep the perimeter.

After the so-called “Shoe Bomber” Richard Reid had attempted to set off explosives in his shoes and shortly after an attempt was made to carry liquid explosives on board, security measures increased once more.
