Erosion is mainly caused by leading factors such as wind, storms, precipitation, and waves from the water plunging into the cliffs, causing them to weaken.

As more of the cliff erodes, it will start to form stacks, which is a piece of rock that's been separated from from the mainland.

When the stack weakens from its base (due to erosion) it collapses, creating stumps. This is when the rocks from the stack fall into the water.

There are mainly 6 types of erosion and this includes Hydraulic Pressure, Corrosion (Abrasion), Corrosion (Solution), Attrition, Wave Pounding, Sub- aerial weathering.

Hydraulic Pressure is when sea
water and air get trapped in cracks. The increasing pressure causes the rocks to crack.

Corrosion (Abrasion) is when rocks
are thrown into the cliff by the sea water breaking off bits of the cliff.

Corrosion (Solution) is when the slight acidity of the sea water causes bits of the cliff to dissolve.
Attrition is when rocks, sand and stone being thrown into each other by the sea water, current and waves.
Wave pounding is when the immense power of waves crashing into cliffs causing them to weaken.Sub-aerial weathering is when the top of the cliffs being attacked by the weather, making the cliffs weaker and less stable. Wind, rain, heat and cold can all cause the cliff to be weathered.

Bay- an indented area of land normally found between two headlands. Bays are usually more sheltered. So there is less erosive power, meaning you often find beaches in bays.

Headlands- A piece of land that sticks out into the sea. Waves refract around headlands so they experience a lot of erosion forming features like arches and stacks.

Wave cut notches are caused by destructive waves that hit the face of the cliff, causing undercutting between high and low water marks. As this results of corrosion and hydraulic pressure, this then forms the wave cut notches, and this enlarges into a cave.

Wave cut platforms are the ending result as this roof of the cave cannot support any longer. This is due to pressure and freeze-thaw weathering acting on it.

Long shore drifts is the process of the ocean current pulling sand and other material down a beach and by a swash (water being pulled back onto the beaches). Water being pulled into the sea is called a backwash
