The industry that I chose to discuss the impact of AI on is the education industry. This is an area that AI can greatly affect. There are very mixed feelings when it comes to how AI will work with education and I believe that all of the feelings that people have are valid. The reason why I chose this industry is because I have gone through the majority of my education so far without AI being something that people used, and I am now experiencing the change where AI is something that many people are using in the education field, that being students and even teachers. The introduction of this technology so quickly can seem extreme but I don’t think completely saying it is bad is the way that we should go about it, I believe that AI can be used very positively and with proper guidelines I think that education that students get can be greater than it ever was prior to this. In this padlet I will discuss things such as AI being used on assignments, personalized learning that is specifically tailored to each student, AI in teaching.

Education - AI used in assignments

AI being used on students assignments is a very controversial topic which many people have different opinions about. This is an area where people can get good assistance and help from AI. If you are stuck on a problem and need help with a very specific part, AI can look into that exact question and provide you with steps of how to solve this. Getting direct help can teach you exactly what you are doing and wrong and provide guidance that is perfectly tailored to your needs. On the other hand some people will simply plug their entire assignment into an AI software and copy and paste the results. This is not a good way of learning at all and while in some cases this can get you a good grade, you will not be learning and taking in any of the information. I feel that teachers providing AI guidelines will lead to the best case scenarios. Acting like these softwares don’t exist will not work because every student knows about them, but teaching students how they can use them most effectively could benefit their learning.

Education - Personalized Learning

Personalized learning is another area where AI can greatly improve the learning experience that all students have. What personalized learning does is teach the students the assigned material in a pace that perfectly fits them. The reason this is so useful is because everyone learns at a different pace, and with this method no one will be harmed by learning at a different rate. There are times at school when certain students do not grasp the topic as easily as the other students do. This could lead to them not having a good understanding of the material, while the teacher moves on. The opposite also happens where some students might understand a difficult topic quite quickly, and will have to sit through multiple demonstrations of the same thing. If learning is perfectly made for each student then the things you need more help with you can get more help with, and the topics that you have a full understanding of you can move on from

When AI is talked about in the education industry most of the conversation is about how students will use these technologies. An area that not as many have discussed is how teachers can use AI. Similar to students this is something where if properly used this can be extremely beneficial and help teachers out a lot. There are softwares out there where teachers can upload their notes and lessons, and AI can instantly generate a powerpoint which they would be able to show the students. This is something that I witnessed first hand with a professor using an AI generated powerpoint and revealing it after the class was over. None of the students had any idea that the powerpoint was AI generated since he made sure to read over anything and check for any mistakes. As long as teachers take proper measures of checking over the material before it is shown to students then this can greatly increase the productivity of teachers and save them a lot of time that they previously needed to prepare.

Future Measures and Ethical Concerns

With AI improving at such a rapid pace the future does hold a lot of unknowns. If this does keep getting better and better than big issues could arise. Right now if AI is fully used on an assignment then a lot of teachers can tell by things such as the robotic tone of writing. These tools becoming so powerful that no one has to do any work on their own is definitely a valid fear to have. Ethically it is very wrong to have all of your work done by AI, and this is very harmful to your learning. In the future I believe that there are a few different things that are likely to happen. I think AI services that solve homework problems will get a lot better. I also think AI writing will become much better and sound less robotic. The only way that we can try and make AI use in the education field ethical is by providing proper guidelines and teaching students how to work with it in a proper way. On the positive side there is also a good chance that new AI services will come out that can help students learn in different ways. New technologies that meet specific students needs and help them out are always good.

Societal Impact

The societal impact that AI being used in education could bring on is very big. Depending on how everyone uses these services could change a lot about the way that they develop. In earlier years of school paying attention to what you are learning is very vital and provides the complete foundation for your whole schooling experience. As soon as you start falling behind you can get very confused and trapped, which can lead to you being demotivated. If someone who is young gets a hold of AI they will easily be able to complete all of their work with that, and this will be very harmful to their development. If this becomes a big issue then we will see many more people struggling with actually understanding concepts such as multiplication and division. Many young students will always try and get things done in the easiest way possible which is where this can be detrimental. Meeting with students in class and making them do work with no devices is the best way to make sure they are understanding the topics that are being taught. I also believe that parents should monitor the AI use of their kids to make sure that they are properly doing work and not simply getting every answer from a software.

Overall AI in the education field is something that will inevitably be used and all we can do is try and guide people to use this in a way that is productive and helps everyone. If you simply throw your assignment into an AI software you will get answers but this will not teach you anything and could cause you to fall behind other students. Teachers need to show AI as a supplemental tool so students know a proper way in which they can get help if they need, while not completely cheating.
